Really like the look of a few here, but I’ll know more once a market forms, and hopefully see one soon.
Benson
Surprise switch to Sandy Thomson has inevitably paid dividends, and having a great season. This always looked the obvious target, and definite shortlist material. Not quite my first choice, but given it’s from this yard, I’ll have him covered in some shape or form.Deere Mark
Bit of a slow burner, but he’s finally going the right way, winning two on the bounce. Deprived a tilt at The Betfair, due to the going, the weather forecast here looks kinder, and I think he’s an interesting one.Faivoir
Has ran well in the last two runnings of this, but questions to answer after an abysmal showing in The Betfair. He looked to be run off his feet, but if he can put that behind him, he’s a huge player off his current mark.Galice Macalo
Wouldn’t fit the usual profile of what I’d look for here, but she’s caught my eye a couple of times this season, and yard more than capable of landing something like this. Runs today at Taunton, and should give me a better idea. Certainly a horse I’ve never bet before, but every intention of before the seasons out. Obvious question marks though about running a week and a half later here after TauntonHomme Public
Following this outfit more this season, and been quite impressed by them. Homme Public has had a decent season, and he looked the runner turning for home on a Saturday at Ascot, before “finding trouble”, and if turning out relatively quickly here, then very, very high on my shortlistSoaring Glory
Wouldn’t be my first choice right now, but not totally ruled out off his current mark.No rush till Monday, but I’d expect a market up before then. Slight preference for Homme Public or Galice Macalo at this stage, but given he’s from the Sandy Thomson yard, I have to add Benson as well, especially as he’s likely to have had this as main target all year.
Benson
Galice Macalo
Homme PublicFebruary 21, 2023 at 01:38 #1636397If he was to run Ganapathi would have a few of my Sheckles , yard red hot (50% win rate last 14 days) , never hit the targets for Mullins but that looks a nice hcap mark
February 21, 2023 at 14:24 #1636435West Cork surprisingly not entered in the County despite a very generous 4lb drop from the handicapper this week. If he’s not injured and turns up here instead he’d get my vote. The consistent Hacker Des Places is another I like but he has entries in the National Spirit as well as the County and Martin Pipe at the festival.
February 21, 2023 at 18:24 #1636464It’s definitely Ganapathi for me, and if he opened up at a fair price I would definitely have an ap bet
February 22, 2023 at 14:14 #1636534Ganapathi is my selection as well. I’ll have a reasonable punt on him should there be any ap market.
I Like To Move It surprised me at Wincanton, and although it must be doubtful that he would run here, I would certainly bet him if he did
February 22, 2023 at 21:12 #1636602I won’t have an ante-post in this, but right now I’m thinking Deere Mark or Playful Saint
February 27, 2023 at 13:04 #1637197McTigue is my big fancy here, and I will take a gamble and have a bigger than average ap punt this afternoon.
I’m another who likes Ganapathi, and he will be my second bet in this
February 27, 2023 at 13:39 #1637202THe one that catches my eye after the 5 day forfeit stage is Holmes St Georges. Lightly raced, created a good impression at Musselburgh in the autumn when zooming clear from Whizz Kid. Second at Carlisle recently in a decent Class 3 event over 19.5 furlongs 3 lengths behind Tanganyika with the rest well beaten off. Showed enough speed at Musselburgh over 15.5 furlongs to suggest the drop back to 2m here should be no problem .
March 2, 2023 at 06:58 #1637493I don’t like to say anything too negative about Emmet Mullins’ horses because he just seems to find a way of improving them and winning these big pots but that rating for Mctigue is incredibly harsh for a juvenile. Consider that Vauban was only rated 146 heading into the Triumph last season and I think only 150 ish after winning it. I didn’t think this looked a very deep race for the prize money so he might be able to pull it off.
Regards what he does at Cheltenham, I’ve seen some on here and social media suggesting the Martin Pipe. I think that’s very unlikely for a couple of reasons. First of all he’s miles down the list because of his age and even with a penalty would need probably double figures to pull out. The other bit is the penalty. Consider what I just said about his rating relative to last years Triumph winner. If they ran him in either the Boodles or Triumph he will run free of his penalty as he’s already top weight in the Boodles and no penalty can force him above his current weight. Its an absolute no brainer surely? The only thing that may steer them to the Triumph is the longer rest period.
March 2, 2023 at 09:47 #1637502I don’t think McTigue is at all well handicapped, and he’s very short, but I’ve said that about runners from that yard before and they’ve won.
But you get the odd one drifting like a barge on the day and running like a drain too – remember Thousand Tears in the Greatwood.
I used to swerve any race Barney Curley had a runner in – I’m not far short of that with this fella.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 2, 2023 at 11:56 #163750716 left in… What are the odds that we get the dreaded Saturday morning withdrawal to take it down to 3 places?
March 2, 2023 at 16:02 #1637540Lebowski for me at around 28-1, and I’ll definitely take advantage of the 6pls on offer.
March 2, 2023 at 21:58 #1637587A couple stand out on my figures with many of the rest within a few pounds:
157 Colonel Mustard
155 Teddy Blue
149 Luttrell Lad
149 Lebowski
149 Thereisnodoubt
148 Wajaaha
147 Nayati
146 CormierI’ll take top 2 against field and wait on the on-course market for prices.
Colonel Mustard has been chasing on two occasions this season, but his run at Cheltenham last March behind State Man puts him in with a strong chance. Distance suits, his only disappointing run over hurdles was when upped to 2m 4f at Aintree in April, and cut in the ground no problem.
Teddy Blue is a keen going sort, but being up with the pace is an advantage at Kelso. Ran a cracker for third in the ‘Schweppes’, has performed well with a bit of cut and track shouldn’t be a problem.
March 3, 2023 at 19:40 #1637643Deere Mark for me.
Won his last two very nicely and is undoubtedly well in on his mark.
Probably the right thing to do not to run him in the betfaor as that was in all likelihood going to be a bridge too far but still worth noting he was entered until race day morning.
Sam Thomas quoted as saying the better ground will be more suitable too so should run well.
I’ve also put him in a win double with Does he know in the grimthorpe at Donny.
March 3, 2023 at 19:59 #1637646I’ll throw a dart at Teddy Blue ew 5 places
March 3, 2023 at 20:23 #1637648Torn between Benson and Deere Mark for the win, and considering sitting the pair of them out, but Benson will be covered
The one I did have a token bet on was Tritonic, who I’ve always had a soft spot for. I’d give him a chance here
Tritonic 25’s EW 6pls
March 4, 2023 at 03:39 #1637683VTC- both Max McNeill (owner) and the sponsors’ Pat Cooney were quite positive about Tritonic on yesterday’s What A Shout.
I’ve opted for Wajaaha at 28-1 e/w, six places with Skybet.
