Goodness me, it’s 10 minutes since the race and none of the let’s slag off Joseph brigade have posted
May 7, 2012 at 16:18 #403426terrible ride from o’brien,i dont know what he was thinkin.hes a good young jockey but hes not good enough or experienced enough to be in the position hes in.its not fair on him either to put him in that position i think as hes left wide open for instances like this and the obvious criticism that will come with it.
May 7, 2012 at 17:10 #403428A year ago St Nicholas Abbey went off as a 4/11 favourite in the Alleged Stakes and came 3rd behind Unaccompanied that had an OR of 90. In that race he was ridden by Seamie Hefferman.
It just seems strange to me that I don’t recall Hefferman getting loads of stick on this forum for that ride yet when Joseph doesn’t win, he get castigated.
Did the proven world class Johnny Murtagh ride Sharistan any better today? OK, his horse was only rated 108 compared to St Nicholas Abbey’s 124 so to come in behind St Nick is no problem but to come in so far behind Windsor Palace, you could say was not too good either was it?
May 7, 2012 at 17:59 #403432Not sure if SNA acts on the ground personally.
That said he was never given a chance from that position, JO’B was caught far too far out of his ground in my opinion.May 7, 2012 at 18:17 #403441Deleted
May 7, 2012 at 18:19 #403442Didn’t see the Mooresbridge but I am still struggling with Aiden O’Brien’s post 2000 comment about the race tactics on Camelot.
If I understood correctly the winning hold up tactics were all Joseph’s idea and Aidan had no input…….is it possible that such an inexperienced jockey would be left to decide his own tactics on such an important horse in his first English Classic with no input from a trainer who is normally so animated and vocal when seen discussing tactics with his jockeys………
To me this was a different kind of ‘stallion spin’ from Aiden in order to boost his son’s status as a jockey from very fortunate to be riding for his father at the level that he is to master tactician at the age of 18.
In any case what has been proven is that Camelot is the real deal and that for the Joseph ‘haters’ the source of their problem will go away soon when his weight finally gets the better of him………in the meantime Ballydoyle seem to be getting away rather well with this particular vanity project.
May 7, 2012 at 18:48 #403448When the majority of the horses that Aiden O’Brien trains are owned by one of the most successful group of breeders in the world, I would imagine that as owners of these extremely valuable horses, and future stallions, if they were not happy with the riding arrangements they would have by now appointed a new retained "world class" jockey for Aiden O’Brien to use.
I can only beleive that as they have not done so, they must have full confidence in Joseph riding their horses.
Yes it certainly looked like St Nick was too far back, but so was Sharastan ridden by Johhny Murtagh, a jockey with vastly more experience than Joseph.
All jockeys make errors, as far as I can see most jockeys are quite capable of losing races, particularly when there are "extremes of going".
Last Wednesday, Frankie Dettori seemed like he wasn’t concentrating when the gates opened at the start of the Paradise Stakes and came out last, he ended up getting beaten by a nose, if he had come out immediately I guess he might well have won by a length possibly. No one on here posted any complaint.
Some years ago in the soft ground at Ascot Summoner the Godolphin pacemaker won because Frankie couldn’t get his horse to go and win, these things seem to happen particularly when the ground is soft or heavy.
May 7, 2012 at 18:51 #403450He rode the same race as Murtagh, as has been pointed out by three naps.
The sectionals on that race would be interesting.
May 7, 2012 at 18:59 #403451I’m not one for witch-hunts at all – especially on an obviously talented, and more importantly polite and unassuming young man.
But – he didn’t ride the same race as Murtagh – Murtagh was after his mount a fair bit earlier than O’Brien. O’Brien could have won that race, but c’est la vie.
These things happen to all jockeys, but its accentuated by the fact his own pacemaker has done for him.
May 7, 2012 at 19:15 #403454He got it wrong and you may or may not accept the post race inquiry comments, but in the past Windsor Palace has stopped at 1 or 2f marker and perhaps this was the expectation this time.

I dont believe the sectionals would prove anything more than Joseph rode an absolute shocker on a horse rated 2 stone better than the winner, who incidentally was ridden by Joseph himself barely a year ago as pacemaker for
So You Think
.Excuses dont wash it was a dreadful piece of race riding.Johnny Murtaghs horse had beaten the winner in the past too so one could criticise his judgement but bearing in mind there is only 8-9lb difference in their respective ratings finishing 21/2l behind the winner is far more acceptable than being beaten a fast finishing length that should really have been a 5 length victory pulling double.I do recall camp Coolmore suggesting St Nick needed plenty of cut in the ground as a 2yo and now saying he hates it,better still Aidan said running him in the 2000gns blunted his speed for a whole year………er yeh right! Thank goodness
Camelot
got up on the line as Punters would be definately be saying Coolmore dont train them for the Guineas anymore. What Bookmakers money was lost on the 2000gns was certainly won back in the 1000gns,you could imagine the conversation on the flight home by the Coolmore team saying "Christ we put the public away with
Maybe
",(looked the size of an elephant in the ring)! "Ah but we tell them nothing remember"! We remember alright, some of us have the memory of an Elephant!
May 7, 2012 at 20:35 #403469DC – Murtagh realised they were in trouble, and got to work a lot earlier than young Joseph. Joseph didn’t apply any significant pressure until just entering the final furlong. It was extremely complacent, and if it was JP Murtagh who had ridden that race whilst in the job two years ago, pretty sure he would have gotten more than an earful from The Master of Ballydoyle.
And further to the point, St Nicholas Abbey is a proven stayer, winning Group races over 12 and 14 furlongs. He could have made it a lot tougher test of stamina.
May 7, 2012 at 20:50 #403474AOB did seem a little, er, narked when being interviewed by Gary O’Brien later in the day.
No cocoa and cookies for JOB tonight.
May 7, 2012 at 21:21 #403478Schooling in public would sum the performance for me as Joseph knows his fractions as he’s been a pacemaker many times himself, when a 58 rated horse wins the very next race and clocks a time less than a second slower than St Nick did over C/D that in itself shows how slow Joseph was allowing his mount to travel,he was basically going a half speed gallop, one which he should have been able to close the winner down from at any point he wanted,he’ll only go and win the Coronation stakes next time out and positively fly past Guess who?…
Windsor Palace
.
Excuses are inacceptable for todays performance and in doing so Aidan only loses any credibility he has earned over the years!May 7, 2012 at 22:26 #403486Fame and Glory and Yeats all over again.
Blackbeard to conquer the World
May 7, 2012 at 22:52 #403493Yes, it reminded me of all the controversy and red faces over the infamous Ascot pacemaker-makes-fools-of-them saga.
When will some jockeys learn not to be complacent and not to just assume that some supposedly easy-to-pick-off pacemaker will just come back to the field and be swallowed up by the hotly-fancied horses?
Why not be pro-active and not just assume that a front-runner will weaken and just come back to you without having to try too hard?
The jockeys who slip up like this deserve all the criticism they get for their incompetence and bad judgement.May 7, 2012 at 23:15 #403499I’ll be astounded if he wins the Coronation Stakes TAPK. He might be in with a shout in the Coronation CUP though. (sorry pal, you’d have done the same to me!)
