Firstly, apologies if this has already been mentioned on the forum, but I looked through several threads and couldn’t see anything. As usual, I looked at the Oddschecker website for best odds this morning, and at about 9:15 am, printed off a copy. I’m looking at it now, and Mon Mome was between 66-1 and 100-1, with a couple of firms going 80s. However, in todays Racing Post preview on page 72, they have Mon Momes price as……20-1!!! Was this a typo, or maybe did this reflect the chance that the RP thought he had?

April 5, 2009 at 04:16 #220411Don’t know about any typo, but those of us who had had a bet had already lost the faith. You could have got 190 overnight//today Kept on looking at it, but I was trying to look after my pennies. Has anyone heard the story behind Rambling Minster’s PU?

Do tell……
April 5, 2009 at 12:45 #220430Rambling Minster made a mistake (think the one after Valentine’s) when in midfield and then got brought to a virtual standstill by the fallers at the 18th when towards the rear, pulled up before next.
April 5, 2009 at 12:57 #220432Rambo was my main selection and I was very disappointed he didn’t really get a mention until his race was over. I thought the BBC would have a spotter for the ones near the top of the betting since so many people would be wanting to know how they were going – or maybe it doesn’t work like that? The BBC did show behind the scenes and they did have a number of spotters with quite a few screens to look at.

Didnt study the race as closely as some years and kicking myself. How many horses at that price have similar ability and are also handled by a superb trainer?
Wasnt he near enough favourite for the welsh national?
April 5, 2009 at 13:43 #220436The 9-2 favourite for the Welsh National no less, Clive.
To me there were enough factors to explain his inflated price yesterday at least in part, if not necessarily in whole;
– some pretty estimable form since Chepstow,
– an impotent tenth place in the race last year,
– the fact he ticked precisely NO boxes in terms of housewives’ / once-a-year punters’ choice of trainers or jockeys they’ve heard of.
Nor does he have a person’s name, or one with any religious connotations. Nor is he a grey horse, a mare, or ridden by a lady jockey. In short, he possesses none of the things that can shorten a horse’s price to artificially short odds in the National, and other, possibly less deserving, animals were mown in to at his expense.
That’s an unscientific explanation, anyway. Maybe the real answer is less fun.

What were you doing watching it on the Beeb !!
April 5, 2009 at 13:54 #220439Hey GC, he was an obvious pick for some who use the double letter factor a la Red Rum, Party Politics
April 5, 2009 at 13:55 #220440Richard, I am reliably informed that some people haven’t got Racing UK, they don’t think it’s worth the money?!

April 5, 2009 at 13:57 #220441Nor does he have a person’s name
A good friend of mine is a once a year punter. His name’s Mark, and he always backed Kingsmark when it ran in the National. His six year old daughter just happens to be Monica – and you can guess what they call her for short! He mentioned to me in the week about Mon Mome – I did phone him up last night but got no answer – maybe he’s heading for palm tree paradise as we speak!!

April 5, 2009 at 13:59 #220444Great news for Venetia and a good training performance.
Mon Mome is another of those horses I have almost bought over the years and he did make the "second cut" when I was working through the national card – but as Jeremy says he did not really tick any of the boxes.
Had I let my head rule my heart when it came to the betting I may have had a tenner each way on him for the fun of it – but being a pragmatist I struck him off my list.
I bear no grudges though and it really was good to see him win.
Also I don’t really think he could be called a freaky 100/1 winner – with Foinavon he was handed the race almost by default.
Whereas yesterday I can’t recall so many being in with a chance as they rejoined the racecourse proper for the final time – including several "fancied" runners. He just outstayed his rivals.
It was also good to see Venetia’s reaction afterwards – she genuinely did seem surprised at the result. Often the trainer with 20/20 hindsight will say “oh yes I always fancied his chances,” Venetia was refreshingly honest.
April 5, 2009 at 14:10 #220448Get on the net or down a betting shop then Colin !

It would have looked a daft price in just about any other race, but when there are 40 runners to legislate for it possibly reflected Mon Mome’s chances given he really looked as though he didn’t want to know at both Haydock and Uttoxeter (where he was drinking in my "last chance saloon"
).Then again, I always did think that Cheltenham form with Star de Mohaison was mustard!
April 5, 2009 at 14:42 #220453100-1 … you could’ve put £1 on every horse in the race and still come off £60 richer

When being interviewed she comes across as modest and likeable which can make one forget what an assiduous and perceptive reader of the form book she is.
April 5, 2009 at 16:08 #220465Some of you will be aware of the reasons for my absence in recent weeks and in that respect I offer my sincere thanks to those members who sent me personal and very touching messages of comfort, and those members who I feel sure had kind thoughts during my sad loss.
It wasn’t my intention to come back to the Forum so soon but this particular topic seems an appropriate one to begin to pick up the pieces again.
It’s just that I decided to join my family in having a purely ‘out of interest’ bet and for no reason other than the name sounded like My Mum I put one of my smallest bets ever on it. For obvious reasons, after the race, I did think that perhaps some strange intervention had occurred. Perhaps my Mum is still looking after me. Who knows?
