Put it this way – I’ve done my regular four bets* in the race and, while The Momester (yes, I know no-one calls him that) isn’t one of them, I wouldn’t necessarily discourage someone from betting on him (unlike some other horses!)
I’ve been trying to get people to call him ‘The Legend’ but no-one will!
March 24, 2010 at 09:15 #285233Yes indeed, still have a few left though which fit my model, Snowy Morning is increasingly becoming my main hope as his profile looks suitable.
Snowy Morning seems to compete well on different surfaces & has done well in Ireland & ok in the UK mainland, goes on various types of ground & has won or come close between two & a half & three & a quarter miles, so is quite a versatile horse & is trained by the very talented Willie Mullins, so 25/1 seems to be a reasonable value bet.

Your spot on anthonycutt. Whilst he has a chance of winning again, there is no value in backing Mon Mome after coming third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The time to back Mon Mome was before the Gold Cup, as the bookies have adjusted they’re odds acoordingly & there’s very little value now & it would be sensible to look elsewhere !

March 27, 2010 at 08:13 #285855Surprised Treadwell hasn’t kept the ride on Mon Mome, can understand Venetia wanting a quiet life but Coleman had the chance to ride last year and turned it down. If I’d been the owner the first thing I would have said to Treadwell after winning is "you keep the ride".
Unsurprisingly Treadwell’s been snapped up by Nicholls.March 27, 2010 at 09:29 #285864Obviously he can, but I don’t see him doing so. I wouldn’t get too carried away by his Gold Cup third. A great achievement undoubtably, but he stayed on past tired and non staying beaten horses who actually raced to win. He’s had a good season and will run well, but he wouldn’t be my choice as the winner.
As for Treadwell not keeping the ride, its not surprising really, it was a chance spare for him last year and had Nick Gifford had a horse in either race, he’d have been on that.March 27, 2010 at 10:48 #285897Obviously he can, but I don’t see him doing so. Venetia Williams mentioned prior to the race that, this was a warm up for the Grand National, so not to bad a race from Mon Mome, the big problem now is the price, because all of the bookmakers have now tightened their odds accordingly with Mon Mome & there is know value left.

Unsurprisingly Treadwell’s been snapped up by Nicholls.Treadwell probably thinks that history will not repeat itself, so rather than be on a horse with big expecatations after last year, switch to a great trainer like Nicholls & see if he can perform wonders on Nozic another outsider like last years Mon Mome.
It makes sense I suppose ……….

March 29, 2010 at 15:10 #286295If you go stictly on the form book then Mon Mome won the National off 148 and is now off 155 but won twelve lengths so it has a serious chance and a form line with Comply or Die which it beat twelve lengths is eight pouns better off so that should finish close to it!! But then conditions, form, luck and jockey performance have to be considered too!!
Personally I dont think it will win again but thats because apart from Red Rum they don’t win two on the trot!!
Humble Pie is ready though!!

To be honest 3rd place downwards was a bit of a non event in the GC…..anyone that had a horse that could stay on at the end had a chance of snatching 3rd.
I dont think his form in the GC is as good as a lot of people are saying it is TBH.

I’ve got a sneaky fiver waiting to go on Comply Or Die for exactly the reason you specify!

I totally except that, Mon Mome has a fair chance of winning the National again but, it doesn’t qualify
for a bet now because it stayed on well for third in the
Gold Cup & the bookies has now reduced their odds. Therefore Mon Mome offers know value at all to any bettor
& punters should look elsewhere. The two things I always
look for in betting is a solid selection & value.Mark
March 31, 2010 at 12:30 #286707Another thing I noticed about Mon Mome from last year; he jumps on the inside of the track and saves himself so much ground by doing so. His jumping is superb. For some reason I tend to think of him as a rather small horse but I’m not sure that he is. I also have to admit to the fact that he and Nil Desperandum [loved that horse; his death at Uttoxeter was tragic..I was sure that he was going to win the National that year] have somehow morphed into the same horse. He won the race so easily last year, no matter how many stats I throw at myself I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him winning again. He was finishing like a train at the end of the Gold Cup; he’d probably only just got started.
Mon Mome is a small horse, personally I hope he runs brilliantly, just a shame Liam is jocked off in favour of Aiden Coleman. I heard last year he threw a hissy fit because he chose the wrong horse, didn’t even congratulate Liam. Nil Desperandum’s half brother was at the Derby Sales he was lovely and didn’t make much money.

I’ll probably have a small win bet on Snowy Morning (9lbs lower in the weights from last year and 12lbs better off for his 5 length 3rd 2 years ago). I’ll also have a e/w bet at 28’s on Comply or Die (probably the best bet). I know they’re likely to get round and it’s good having hope near the end.
March 31, 2010 at 13:43 #286723I’m fairly sure that Mon Mome can repeat last year’s success. However, my wonga will be going on Tricky Trickster instead

Yes very sensible Rob V, whilst he’s capable of repeating
last years’ triumph, there’s not much point in taking
shortened odds to find that out.Mark
