Frankie has become much more selective in which rides he accepts in recent years. Obviously, he continued to honour his retainer with Godolphin, but takes less outside rides at lowly tracks.
Although you could argue that Frankie wants to ensure his longevity as a rider and not burn himself out, this suggests he doesn’t enjoy it as much as he used to. Compare this to the likes of Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes still riding every day, picking up rides in shocking sellers and chasing the championship.
If Frankie does not love racing as much as he used to, you can appreciate how his attention to detail, tactical preparation and sharpness could suffer. I think the young and charismatic Barzalona is a better choice for Godolphin. He might still be a little green, but he clearly has enormous youthful enthusiasm for his job. With a good work ethic and more experience, he can only get better.
Whether Barzalona’s ability peak has surpassed Dettori’s gradual trough yet is debatable. If it hasn’t, then it can only be a matter of time.
June 8, 2014 at 17:13 #26228Emerging but unsurprising news that Barzalona will return to France. In diplomatically worded statements Godolphin say he will still ride for them in France while Charlie Appleby was "delighted that the boss has given him this opportunity which will allow his skills to be showcased once more." (glad to see the back of him, in other words!)
Barzalona is a very, very good jockey IMO and I think he’ll thrive back home in France, especially if Fabre takes him under his wing again.
June 8, 2014 at 18:20 #481684Good jockey but thought his was worth more than the bread and butter racing in the week
June 8, 2014 at 19:34 #481693The bread and butter rides. What exactly does that mean? A bit of a put down no doubt especially for a foreigner who was used to being respected and riding at the top level.Let them eat cake was spoken of the hoi polli not the champion jockeys.
June 8, 2014 at 23:16 #481732I’m going to miss him, he was top jockey at Newmarket racecourse last year.
The last time I saw him riding for Appleby was at Newmarket on May 30th where he won on the exciting newcomer, the filly, Bitter Lake.Only thing I didn’t like was his habit of standing up in the stirrups after the winning post when he had won a big race, I don’t think that’s a good or sensible thing to do when a horse is travelling at full speed.
Hopefully he will be able to pick up his career again in France back with Andre Fabre, we might even see him back here next year winning another Derby but not for Godolphin.
JacThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...June 9, 2014 at 05:56 #481746I get the impression that Barzalona was a bit of a poisonous character who rubbed quite a few people up the wrong way with his ‘boy wonder’ attitude. As someone who rose quite suddenly through the operation, I think Charlie Appleby was better placed to see the jockey’s personality than most.
I think it is refreshing to see Appleby’s jockey choices. Martin Lane, Freddie Tylicki and Hayley Turner have all done good jobs for him recently.

What has that got do do with the matter?
