Pithily put. That’s why I’m surprised at the amount of nit-picking post mortems about media coverage and individuals on this Forum.
Really, if a person isn’t going to warm to such a glorious event, I wonder what on earth they
would
warm to?
Quite right.
I thought it was a great race but it’s been described on here as a weak one. And well, I heard that last year too. And the winner won the Arc!
On ‘that’ celebration, it was just so absurd & unusual that it bothered me a little bit less that Treasure Beach didn’t make it to the line in front. And it made me laugh.
June 4, 2011 at 23:51 #358974This jockey is one in a lifetime. He can do it on handicapers that havent won in a while (Light from Mars) and now he wins the Derby at 19!
I think the people moaning about the celebrations couldnt of backed him and sour grapes.
Some Jockey some ride – Brilliant!
Also why all these excuses for Carlton House he ran a cracker but was not good enough on the day.
June 5, 2011 at 00:21 #358978Lads it was a great ride…just accept. I don’t think he misjudged it. The horse was ahead on his angles before the line. He knew exactly where the line was.
Genius lads and you be saying that for many decades to come.
June 5, 2011 at 09:49 #359004Just can’t understand most people thinking it was ok to yank a horse in the mouth that way to show off. Surprised the stewards didn’t have something to say about that. This is more detrimental to a horse, a rider hanging on to it’s mouth to balance himself like that, than whipping it. Animal Aid don’t know about riding so they will not notice, we will not hear from them.
I just wish sports people would be more professional & less arrogant. I also hate Dettori doing flying dismounts, one day a filly will kick him in the head. I was always taught to be quiet around horses.
No doubt racing for change will have approved of Barzalona’s antics as exciting spectacle for the masses, but true horsemen will have been horrified. Hope Fabre did give him a dressing down.June 5, 2011 at 11:56 #359025Superb run by a seriously good horse, got the boy out of trouble big style. No problems with exuberant celebrations, (who’d want 13 Ryan Moore’s there yesterday) but he could so easily have cost Coolmore and Fabre a huge amount of prestige and money with his messing.
No fan of these flash come from behind jockeys and its a cast iron certainty he’ll lose a few big ones riding like that in the future. Maybe he’ll go the same way as Spencer, yesterdays man now that the game has him sussed.
Frankie’s boots need polishing, Mick.
June 5, 2011 at 12:41 #359036I don’t think there is any chance of this jockey turning out like FRANK Spencer.
Go back and watch all his rides since he came over to this country to ride. I have backed them all and can safely say he is not a one dimensional jockey.
The other week he strayed away from the so called big boys at Newmarket and whipped their butts!
This boy is the real deal.
June 5, 2011 at 13:01 #359037It was a fine ride yesterday but not a great one. And I’ll need far more evidence before I believe he is "the real deal". Words like "great" are banded about far too casually and frequently these days.
June 5, 2011 at 13:22 #359043Canford Cliffs – We can agree to disagree on that one, I think coming from last to first in a derby is a great ride, but if we all had the same opionion life would be pretty dull.
On another note – love your title – Canford Cliffs is one of my favourite horses – I really hope it all goes to plan at Royal Ascot.
June 5, 2011 at 13:27 #359048Lovely colt isn’t he. Can’t wait for the big clash.
All the best

Strange comment. If "it was a great ride" because he came from last to first like that. Then what you are saying is, Barzalona did extremely well to win from last place. But the horse was in the wrong position in the first place. Pour Moi broke well and it was Barzalona who took the horse back to last place.
Not every winning ride is a good one.
It was a great ride from the beginning of the straight until a few yards from the line. The rest of the ride was poor. Although you can to some degree "blame" (if that is the right word) Andre Fabre for the original poor positioning.
Pour Moi is better than distances indicate and may yet evolve in to an exceptional racehorse. However, the over all quality of this race was not good compared to some Derbys. Pour Moi only rated 124p by Timeform and Barzalona was not to know the placed horses were not up to it. IF there would have been a horse of a quality just ONE length better than the second Treasure Beach; Pour Moi would NOT have won the Derby and evryone would be saying what a terrible ride.
Then there was his premature ejection.
Not only was he in the wrong position. Coming out of the saddle too soon which could easily have led to losing the Derby. Youthful exuberance will hopefully be tamed a little; at least leave it to after the post.Barzalona is a brilliant young talent, he’s proved that in other races. Will make a top jockey. But I think people on here have been caught up in the last to first, romance and celebration. Getting a horse who is only just good enough to win is a brilliant ride, Pour Moi is better than distances showed yesterday and got Barzalona out of trouble.
Value Is EverythingJune 5, 2011 at 14:22 #359068As I said everyone is entitled to their own opinion. For a jockey having his first ride in a derby I think he deserves a little more credit thats all. People are quick to pick holes in things instead of just enjoying racing.
June 5, 2011 at 14:27 #359070Enjoyed the race tremendously yesterday, but we should also look at the race subjectively for the future. To praise a ride for the sake of occasion is wrong.
Value Is EverythingJune 5, 2011 at 15:38 #359078He’s a top talent. The sport needs as many superstars as it can muster.
Premature celebration was stupid and might have cost him and connections the race, yes. But it was also a thrilling moment and an image that will define both the race and the jockey for years to come.

I think you’re right about too many winning rides being commended, but I’d argue this was a very good ride.
I don’t believe he was too far behind coming into the straight. It’s my view that the jockey didn’t realise how unbalanced the horse would be when mounting his challenge.
In my view, if the race were run again at the Curragh then I’d back the winner to win more decisively. Irrespective of how much ‘rubbish’ is in the race.
June 5, 2011 at 20:49 #359145theres no denying barzalona is an extremly exciting talent and i think he could go right to the top but i dont think he gave pour moi a good ride i think the horse got him out of jail if he had been beaten by a head alot of people would of been saying he had the horse to far back and in my opinion with a better ride he would have won a lot easier
June 6, 2011 at 05:27 #359186Lester came from last to first in the BC. He gets lauded for his brilliant ride. This kid does it and he gets pilloried for his ride. Draw your own conclusion
June 6, 2011 at 14:19 #359247Well Timeform have concluded that the jockey gave the Derby winner a less than great ride, stating that they consider Pour Moi 5lb better than the result in the Derby because of "the way the jockey made him run".
