So, what has this to do with Horse Racing ?
A by-product of the wood industry, is wood shavings. Most horses have deep bed wood shavings in their stables . Because of the economy, wood shaving are now rationed to 5 bags per purchase and will be soon be impossible to get hold of and soon will be extremely highly priced.
So what are the alternatives ? Many, but they will not be able to cope with the demand together with panic buying.
Backing two runners is the relentless pursuit of value. Backing each way is a shortcut to the poor house. Only 7% make a long term profit.
November 26, 2008 at 18:03 #192321You might want to specify "most racehorses" Quadrilla. I’m pretty sure most stables in the UK still use the traditional straw bedding (complete with banks)

OK I stand corrected.
I know of at least one racehorse who beds their straw with an unstable traditional bank.

November 26, 2008 at 18:49 #192342Paper bedding is also quite popular, as it is less dusty.
November 26, 2008 at 21:58 #192418IS, I’d tend to think that shavings are now the most popular form of bedding. Certainly on foreign trips the overwhelming requirement is for shavings.
Notable fans of paper are Luca Cumani and Jeremy Noseda whilst Mike de Kock was using it at Breeders’ Cup as well.
It may be because of the quality of the bedding available though as most French trainers still seem to prefer straw.
November 26, 2008 at 22:44 #192434Was any of MFI’s gear manufactured in this country anyway ?

No I don ‘t think any of it was mostly Hungary I believe, in any case most of it was chipboard so I would thought there would (wood) be more saw dust/chippings around not less as they won’t be using it to make the chipboard so the price will go down
November 27, 2008 at 01:07 #192472Fair points Adrian but my point was regarding the horse industry in general. We used to have a mare who had shavings as we’d put down the straw bedding and it would be gone in the morning as she’d eat it all
November 27, 2008 at 01:18 #192474Most livery yards now, insist on shavings, one of the reasons is disposing of it.
There appears to be more restrictions on burning muck heaps now and shavings degrade much quicker.
We had to revert to shavings for our hunters 2 yrs ago. - AuthorPosts
