I have meet and had plenty of great chats with john suthern. He was a NH jockey in the 70s and 80s and I think he is the only english jockey to win the belgium grand national. He won it on on a horse called kildagin back in the 70s. I have also met plenty of jockeys at a grand national preview people like james and richard evans, ken white, john buckingham and ian watkinson. I have also met richard phillips he was brilliant to talk to very open and honest also very funny. I have also thought that richard pitman seems a good person to talk to he also seems very knowledeable about racing and I bet he has plenty of good stories.

Not much of a story but was at London Euston station and stopped at Smiths on the way to work to nose at the RP (yes, I’m one of those cheapskates who nose at the papers without buying!) when along came a certain Ms L Hislop, resplendant in her long electric blue overcoat.
Figured she needed the paper more then me. (Think she was working at Ludlow that day).
Also been behind Simon Holt in the newsagents opposite Cheltenham Railway Station, behind Sir Peter O’Sullevan at the onsite Chemist and almost flattened by Lord Oaksey (both at Cheltenham)
Even my wife (who doesn’t particularly like racing) has trumped me on this one. Through her childcare work she knows Tony Ennis from ATR

Henrietta knight and terry (lovely lady she made time for everyone to chat to)November 26, 2013 at 21:37 #459903In the early 80s I was at a Frank Carson do in Penrith – he was at the top of his form then, very funny. Anyway, I ended up at a table with one of my early heroes,
Ron Barry who lived, and still does, at Pooley Bridge
, not far from Penrith.
I lived in Penrith for 6 years! How could i not be privy to this!? I know what i’m doing next time i go up to ‘meet up with old mates’
Commentator Darren Owen is the biggest name on my CV. I wrote to him when i was 15/16 asking how i’d get into that line of work. We met at Carlisle races and he is the coolest guy you could ever hope to meet. Very humble and passionate about what he does, but apologetically humorous when the mic is off. He is responsible for most if not all of the commentary gigs i ever got.
My fondest story is when he and commenary’s rising pretender Gareth Topham were staying in Penrith because they were doing a harness racing card in Appleby and they rang me up to see if i wanted to get some dinner with them… suffice to say i was utterly starstruck
After the meal, while Darren was in the toilets, myself and Gareth convinced the waitress to ask for his autograph!… You had to be there
November 26, 2013 at 21:47 #459904I’ve met Martin Pipe’s dad (RIP)dozens of times. I often gave him money that was never to be seen again.

My uncle worked building up Pipe’s stables near Wellington and doing other carpentry work for him, nice chap according to my uncle.

Back in the 1980’s my Dad and me were on our way to the cabbage patch at the Cheltenham festival when she stopped in her car, wound down her window and asked if we would like a cucumber sandwich.
We declined but told her to have a few bob on Cross Master of Tom Bill’s in the RSA.

Must have been quite interesting married to such a shady character?

It sure does. How is he (assuming you still see him)? I mentioned on another thread that I went to Haydock in 1979 to see the Edward Hanmer Chase. If memory serves me, Ian rode Night Nurse that day. He was a tough guy.
November 28, 2013 at 16:54 #460091I waved at Richard Hoiles in the commentary box at Newbury a few weeks ago, he waved back. At least I think it was him, he was a long way away, I suppose it could have been Barty.
I saw Gingertipster putting his bins out a few weeks ago, I shouted over to him but he ignored me.
November 28, 2013 at 22:41 #460110That’s because there was a 0.14% chance that you could of been a murderer, burglar or other such misdemeanour sort of person. Ginger did the right thing.

Even Ginge will laugh at that!
Well, a good 80% chance that he will.
