Sorry Himself, I did have a valid argument at the time, but today I have guessed at what it was, due to being very hungover

I will check my facts and get back to you on that!
He did have the foot problem too prior to the Gold Cup, he wasn’t fresh, the ground wasn’t his favourite, and Denman was also at the top of his game.
There can be no excuses in March if both are 100%, fingers crossed!
December 27, 2009 at 14:39 #265870I can’t see how you can possibly think Kauto Star runs better fresh.
December 27, 2009 at 15:02 #265876Kempton could honour Kauto Star with a statue, according to RP online.
Imagine if he wins a third Gold Cup – Cheltenham will have to follow suit. A fourth win in the Betfair Chase and maybe Haydock will honour him, too.
How many statues can one horse have?

Racegoers will be hardly able to move !
December 27, 2009 at 18:08 #265905I is very annoying when people knock horses who are exceptional. The comparison of horses is difficult between the ages ie Arkle v Kauto Star but what we can say is:-
Kauto Star = Brilliant Horse
Denman = Brilliant Horse
Desert Orchid = Brilliant Horse
Arkle = Brilliant Horse
Golden Miller = Brilliant HorseDoes it really matter if one is "better" than the other? Better is actually a very subjective word. There are only 2 factual comparisons between the many great names being banded about in this thread:-
1) Denman was better than Kauto Star in 2008 Gold Cup
2) Kauto Star was better than Denman in the 2009 Gold CupCant we leave it at that and wait for the 2010 Gold Cup safe in the knowledge that both are great horses?
Also, and I feel its only right, that the likes of Madison Du Berlais, Barbers Shop, Imperial Commander, Nacarat etc are given some praise. They are not quite in the league of those above but they are still in the top 0.01% of all racehorses currently in training. If I owned one of them I’d feel like a very very very privileged man.
I know racing is about opinions much of the time but sometimes I just wish it wasn’t. Its like deciding which of your 2 twin sons is cuter…a stupid comparison!
December 27, 2009 at 18:13 #265907Timeform have provisionally raised Kauto Star 7lb to a figure of 191, making him their joint-third best chaser ever.

An excellent point Douginho. Although nothing will convince me that Arkle was not the best ever, I cheered as loud as my wife would let me when Kauto hit the front yesterday. An exceptional horse who has grown on me over the years. Let me salute a true champion.
How fortunate I am to have lived through the eras of Arkle, Red Rum (the only one I have seen live,)Desert Orchid and now Kauto Star and also the great hurdlers, Persian War, Night Nurse, Sea Pigeon, See You Then and Istabraq. That is why we climb up on to exposed grandstands on freezing cold days to witness heroes such as these
January 6, 2010 at 15:36 #268252According to RP online, Kauto attracted 1.1 million viewers on Boxing Day.
I found that friends and family, who don’t normally take an interest in racing, were bringing him up during conversation.
More than anything, that performance was a wonderful advert for racing.

… and should, heaven forbid, that he lose, then of course he wasn’t at his best ( or he was sick !
).
What I’m wondering is what will you say if it comes up soft and Kauto beats Denman in a canter,,,guess it will be he’s not the horse he was

I will take my punishment like a man – naturally.

However, should the Cheltenham surface be in Kauto’s favour, and should Kauto look a million dollars on the day – and… and… should, heaven forbid, that his big "plodding" stable-mate go and beat him once again; I shall then stand well back and don my ear plugs – as the wailing and gnashing of teeth in Thailand and elsewhere will be absolutely deafening.
