Please not Manhattan Rain. He’s a Waterhouse hype horse. She’d hype just about anything. More Joyous is probably the best filly in Australia according to her. Theseo was the best horse in Australia last season according to her. It just goes on and on.
February 1, 2010 at 00:20 #273337I love Manhattan Rain, and his trial last Friday was unbelievable.
There is something different about this horse though – yes, Gai is the ultimate trainer when it comes to hyping a horse. But she has been saying since before his debut that he may be the best she has ever trained. And from Gai, that is something.
Cost me a good collect though – I’m not a big antepost doubles punter at all, but I had about $50 AUD worth of doubles throughout last spring.
I had Monaco Consul in the Spring Champion Stakes into Manhattan Rain in the Cox Plate for a good $18000 from $5 spent – almost!!!!
And then I had So You Think in the Cox Plate into Warringah in the Melbourne Cup for a $60000 collect from $5 spent. Also had Mourilyan for $10000 from $5 spent.
Heartbreak.
February 1, 2010 at 00:47 #273340I don’t do doubles. Learnt my lesson with Miesque into Ajdal . . .
You Aussies seem quite keen on them, though. The Spring Double and Autumn Double have gone out of fashion in this country, though Moehat had a go at the latter last year.
February 1, 2010 at 01:11 #273344Actually, Andy, there IS something you can help me with. What are the unraced David Hayes 2yos entered up this weekend? He is supposed to be bringing out one or two good ones, that might be worth having a tickle for the Blue Diamond with.

20 ZIPPING Robert Hickmott 115In regards to David Hayes’ 2yo’s this weekend, he has the following:
Gigstar
– Testa Rossa colt, it’s not a prolific family but the dam is the half to the Group 3 winner Armidale. No trial form.
In Faith
– Keep the Faith colt, and once again not a fashionable family. This one was very impressive on debut at Morphettville in Adelaide though, albeit in poor time.
Jalsah
– Elusive Quality filly, not sure about her. Not a great family, but is coming off two Morphettville runs, the second of those a victory over subsequent winner Obsidian Dragon.
Legalistic
– I’m expecting this is the one you may have heard about, a colt by our champion sire Encosta De Lago and the first foal from Group 1 placegetter Legally Bay. No trial form, but should be very competitive.
February 1, 2010 at 04:53 #273352To be honest Andy, I haven’t heard of any Hayes 2yos. It is just that when he was being interviewed on the radio, and was asked about his upcoming 2yos, he was very coy and wouldn’t say any names. That might be because they’re all rubbish though!
I’ll look through the Orr entries when I get home from work.
February 1, 2010 at 06:25 #273359It’s very likely to be the latter!!!
You seem to know a lot about Aussie racing, you would know that before last weekend he was doing very poorly.
February 2, 2010 at 01:52 #273544Seasonal, innit? Peak them in the Spring, let them down, and then peak them again in the Autumn (so long as they’re not Melbourne Cup bound).
Anyway, on the Hayes subject, have just had £23 @ 23 Eagle Falls for the N’ket H’cap. At least I know he is being aimed at the race.
Slept instead of looking at the Orr entries. Bart has two comeback horses I haven’t particularly heard of, so I’ll try to find out about them tomorrow. Will ignore the horse with the Nom De Jeu illness/injury. Entries confirmed by 9am Wednesday, which is 10pm Tuesday here.
Couldn’t listen to Radio 927 today – I think my Windows media player is playing up. Will try to find some alternative tomorrow. Tried listening to 2k, but they had some soccer, so I turned off straightaway.
Gee, this post is just waffle.
February 2, 2010 at 06:31 #273552Eagle Falls definitely has a chance in the Newmarket, I think you’ve had a good investment. His win in the Salinger was great on VRC Derby Day.
I can tell you about Bart’s two – Sirmione has been a real enigma sort of horse, he only seems to peak when he gets 2000m at Flemington. For example, in the spring of 2008, he went really badly, and then he won the G1 Mackinnon Stakes at 80-1. Ran 12th in the Melbourne Cup 3 days later. Returned in better form, albeit not winning form, in the autumn of 2008. Came out and won the G1 Australian Cup over the same track and distance by 5 lengths. He was then out of form in the spring of 2008, but still managed an unlucky 3rd in the G1 Mackinnon again. Can’t have him on Saturday.
Moatize is an up and comer – don’t know if he still qualifies for that tag though. He had his first prep in the autumn of 2008, culminating in a 2nd in the Queensland Derby. He won his maiden at the country Victorian racecourse of Sale two months later, and then made it to the 2008 Melbourne Cup by winning the SAAB Quality 3 days earlier – he ran 6th. Thing is, his form last autumn was great at WFA. He was even favourite for the G1 The BMW at 2400m but he injured himself and hasn’t been seen since. He’s the smoky at massive odds.
February 2, 2010 at 18:43 #273650Thanks Andy. Unfortunately there isn’t an ante-post Orr market on betfair for me to dabble with Moatize.
Sport 927 and Windows Media Player still aren’t seeing eye, but I’ve just found out that I can access the Andrew Bensley
morning update.
For anyone in Britain who hasn’t heard him before, he is very informative and authoritative:-http://www.sport927.com.au/gateway/Dail … 020210.asx
All I have to do now is work out whether 3rd Feb is 030210 or 020310.
February 3, 2010 at 19:26 #273823Okay, we’ve had Starspangledbanner’s trainer banned for 6 months, and a Hayes horse setting a course record, and Denman going for the soft option, but I know that this is the story that my public want to read . . .
Cockies turn out the lights
ANDREW GARVEY
February 4, 2010A FLOCK of around 2000 cockatoos that decided to make a stop at Moonee Valley racecourse this week have munched their way through power cables, forcing tomorrow night’s meeting to be switched to twilight times.
The damage to cabling in over half the 60-plus lighting towers was discovered on Tuesday. An audit showed the lighting was still operational but wiring was exposed, and with rain forecast for tomorrow, any moisture coming into contact with the wiring could cause the lights to fail.
The meeting will start at 4.15pm, with the afternoon meeting at Pakenham brought forward to start at 11.54am.
Moonee Valley Racing Club will use falcons to disperse the cockatoos.
Harness Racing Victoria has been assured the harness racing lights have passed inspection and the Hunter Cup meeting on Saturday night will go ahead.

Thank God the cockatoos didn’t charge during a race!
February 5, 2010 at 04:15 #274056It happened with seagulls a few years ago at Melbourne’s Sandown racecourse.
February 5, 2010 at 17:53 #274190When is Coolmore new acquisition running again. Starspangledbanner (spelling?). Interesting to see how he gets on
Sorry, Wallace, only just seen this post. The horse was probably going to run on March 6th, in either the Australian Guineas, or the Newmarket H’cap.
Not knowlegable enough to know whether there would be another race planned before then.
However, the trainer is due to start a six month ban at the end of February.
Penalty is for substance that stops fillies coming into season, that is not allowed for colts or geldings, found in a sample from Starspangledbanner himself in August.February 5, 2010 at 19:16 #274213I’ve been having trouble with this Orr Stakes.

Have just come up with an angle, to back up the bet I’ve already had. Bensley has just repeated that the backmarkers Viewed, Shocking, Zipping, Sirmione and Littorio will be in trouble because of the lack of pace. However, everyone knows there will be a lack of pace. Kavanagh won this race with Maldivian last year, and I’m fairly sure he has stolen a race from the front before [2008 Cox Plate], so maybe they will attempt to do that with
[edit: Just so that you don’t worry, the stake is only 1/5 of the one that was on Nicconi.]February 5, 2010 at 22:28 #274273I’m fairly sure Danzylum will roll to the lead if possible. Typhoon Tracy, who has led a fair few times in the past, should sit second – possibly outside the leader or take cover. Maybe she’ll just be good enough to try and make all. Shocking hasn’t been prominent to my memory in the past, and I have a theory that the progeny of Street Cry are best ridden quietly. If you look at just about every good horse he’s sired they all sit back and have a great turn of foot. Heart Of Dreams shouldn’t be too far off Typhoon Tracy, if not level. Of the stayers, Zipping is the interesting one from the stayers as to where he might sit in the run for me. He made a huge move round the outside of the Sandown Classic field when there was no speed on and he was 2nd entering the straight. If he can do that what is the point of holding him up over 1400m? Very little, but this is a Lloyd Williams runner. This is stating the obvious more than a little bit, but Typhoon Tracy really shouldn’t be beat in this the way it sets up.
February 6, 2010 at 05:21 #274304Oh well, so much for my crystal-ball gazing. Shocking settled in last, and stayed there.
I doubt she’ll be coming over to Royal Ascot, because the trainer has pointed out that Typhoon Tracy has lots of possible targets at home.
