I think master mindeds race today has thrown up my favorite piece of commentary ever, the emotion in the commentators voice when he says "hes making voy por ustedes look ordinary… and he’s not ordinary" brilliant. Who was that commentating? Link below.

Instant addition to one of my favorite races ever
March 13, 2008 at 21:23 #150676A great performance. I said it would take something special to beat Tidal Bay’s Arkle run and this is it.
Let’s not get too carried away just yet. One race doesn’t make a horse great. He can’t be compared to Kauto Star at this time, anyone who thinks he should is going way OTT.
So far, the performance of the week. Let’s see him do it again…
March 13, 2008 at 21:31 #150679fantastic race jumped n travelled super, n barely out of a haCKING CANTER……….

Simon Holt.
March 13, 2008 at 21:57 #150692Cheers gaz.
I think Masterminded deserves to be compared to kauto star as he has thrown up a performance that is right up there with kauto stars (arguably better, arguably not), at the end of the day he could get injured and retired tomorrow (heaven forbid) but nothing will take away from what he did today, the horse has achieved greatness, now its just a case of watching him maintain greatness. I doubt he will ever be a price i could back ever again, but will always love watching him.

I thought that when i saw his price come up after he had won the race, 3/1.
Thought at the time, what a fantastic price for a victory like that.
March 13, 2008 at 22:09 #150696Master Minded answered all the questions and then some today. A superlative performance.
Looking at the Channel 4 slow motion footage of the horse after the race really brought home to me just how mature and professional he is for a lightly raced 5yo. I’ve never seen those qualities in such abundance in a young horse before. Really amazing!
Great call by Simon Holt and congrats to all who were on.
March 13, 2008 at 22:13 #150701Who placed VPU at 5/2 top choice ahead of MM? Post-race you would be mad to consider such a thing.
Now THAT is some victory. Put on an absolute clinic.
March 13, 2008 at 22:19 #150705Master Minded has achieved ‘greatness’ after one impressive victory? I’m…I’m speechless.
Kauto Star has demonstrated the ability to beat the best over a variety of distances. He has two Tingle Creek’s, two King George’s and a Gold Cup to his name – that is what I consider to be on the verge of greatness.
Inglis Drever has beat the best for a number of years and has three World Hurdle victories to his name – that’s greatness. That’s his name indelibly etched in the annals of time.
Please, a little perspective.

March 13, 2008 at 22:45 #150720We clearly have different criteria for the term greatness Bosranic. Kauto Star has never won a champion chase, beating a 170 rated favorite by 19 lengths on the bridle, does that make him any less great than Master Minded, I doubt it they have just achieved different great things.
Rock Of Gibraltar won a string of consecutive group 1s, a great achievement, but he never would have beaten George Washington in the 2006 QE2. Who is the greater horse?
I would say that various things can make a horse great, and todays performance establishes the horse as a great, in my view, because the horse as achieved something the likes of which will possibbly never be seen again.
Should history chose to forget todays performance, it will be a long time before I will.

Impressive? Yes, VERY!! Great? Not yet, sorry.
Let him produce another performance (or two) of equal measure, then I’ll start considering.

Fair one mate, I hope he does, as it will be a pleasure to watch, just as kauto is, Nicholls had said before the race that after the champ chase he would be getting put away until next year so we will have a long wait before we see him again i think.
March 13, 2008 at 23:00 #150729My view is that MM’s performance today was simply incredible. Without a doubt one of the very best I have seen. However, I feel one great performance doesn’t yet make the horse great. He has incredible potential at the age of 5 with improvement sure to come. Lets hope he can remain injury free and develop into the superstar he appears to be.

Yes, I hope he does, too. It was a privilege to watch and an honour to be there. It was a breathtaking performance and, to be honest, I didn’t realise what I had witnessed until I saw the replay when I got home! I just didn’t put Master Minded and THAT performance together, I suppose.
All eyes will be on him next season…can he do it again?
March 13, 2008 at 23:53 #150737Bosranic,
We get to the question:
What is greatness?
In my opinion "greatness" is putting up a great performance, quality wise. That to me is a horse capable of a Timeform rating of over 140 on the flat, or 180 over jumps.
Kauto Star, Master Minded, Moscow Flyer are "great".
Inglis Drever has never put up a performance of "greatness".
However emotional it may have been, beating Kasbah Bliss a length is not "greatness".
