Is another win for Quevega on the cards? I’d love to see Annie Power take her on in this but with her at 5/1 in the betting it seems as though she’ll be heading to the Champion Hurdle. However, should connections choose otherwise 5/1 is a superb price. Looks very questionable whether she’ll turn up or not though so maybe a race best left alone at this time of year as I don’t fancy backing anything at evens this far in advance.
Unless you’re looking for an outsider with e/w value, that’s something I need to look into.
November 23, 2013 at 19:50 #459591A definite runner and improver who could just be good enough is Cockney Sparrow who jumps for fun and has an engine
March 10, 2014 at 18:37 #470658Looking at the race for places behind Quevega, I think Highland Retreat is a decent shout. They often go a fair enough pace in this race. Glens Melody had not been particularly impressive this season and Cockney Sparrow will struggle to get the trip on running style and pedigree. Highland Retreat is the type to grind on through beaten runners to pick up some crumbs.
I’ll take her each-way at 16-1.

If My Tent Or Yours wins the Champion Hurdle then I reckon Cockney Sparrow may be worth a small investment. I had picked Highland Retreat as an each way bet for this race but I am now going to wait until the outcome of the CH is known.
Good luck all.
March 10, 2014 at 22:05 #470712Won’t be betting but would be tempted in with Highland Retreat at 16s.

I’m not sure Cockney Sparrow will appreciate the step up in trip, looks a speedy mare to me and would prefer Cailin Annamh for a place.
March 10, 2014 at 23:52 #470750Totally agree THM. She has a very speedy pedigree as well.
I think you want a staying type for the places.
March 11, 2014 at 16:13 #470897Well done to Quevega and the Mullins team. Six Mares Hurdles!
Value Is EverythingMarch 11, 2014 at 20:13 #470960The sooner this race is binned the better. A boil on Cheltenhams backside.
The usual crap fare on offer today, and I have also ruined a nice suit after vomiting at the 5 Live fawning coverage of this abomination.

Without Quevega it would be some joke, although I’d say there’s more chance of a mares chase than cutting this unfortunately.

I make you right – it will probably be a filler on the 5th day, headlined by the Grade 1 2m 2.5f Chase for horses who don’t quite stay the Rynair trip, but are a bit slow for QM.
John Inverdale and bloody Cornelius (what sort of name is that anyway?) waxing lyrical about the "Wonder-Mare" beating nothing for the 6th straight year and "beating Golden Millers record" (FFS!!).
Sorry to all the luvvies, but all I could think about was how this crap race had robbed me of seeing Quevega v Big Bucks et al for the last half a decade.
March 11, 2014 at 21:45 #470998It seems harsh to crib a six time winner at Cheltenham but I have to agree it’s a Mickey Mouse race that is proof of spreading the butter too thin.
Golden Miller must have done a few somersaults in his grave listening to the plaudits handed out for a race that has had more donkeys than Blackpool.
I’d rather watch the Flyball relay at Crufts to be honest with you.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 11, 2014 at 22:21 #471023"Quevega’s winning performance was amongst the most astonishing ever seen in the history of the Cheltenham Festival." – Cornelius Lysaght.
Is this bloke taking the p155 or what??
March 11, 2014 at 23:05 #471044Hardly the fault of quevega that there is no opposition to challenge. For the horse to be produced to win at 6 festivals in a row deserves some respect at least.
I for one felt privileged to see it.
Only sad point today was Our Conor RIP boy.
March 12, 2014 at 18:14 #471244Why do we complain about this race when having female only races is such a norm in flat racing???. Annie Power aside, they were the best of the female population that we have. Well done to the winner

March 12, 2014 at 19:12 #471261Because by Festival Conditions Race standards its an absolutely crap race with crap horses?

To measure the true greats you need to put performances into perspective.
There is much more quality on the flat with numerous Group ones open to female horses only, including two Classics.
As Treve showed, the girls can sometimes beat the boys in the very top company. With the best will in the world you could never say that of Quevega, and it is a fact that she made pretty hard work of beating largely dross these past two years.
It is a great achievement in terms of longevity but she has been very sparingly and selectively raced, with only fifteen starts over the past six years. Some horses have more than that in a season!
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
