In the Anglo Irish jumps classifications, Many Clouds has been rated 171, putting him top of the staying ranks.
No point resurrecting a whole thread (Gold Cup 2017) regarding his Cotswold Chase run, but nice to see posthumous recognition for the horse and his connections as well as a nod toward those who called it his best performance straight after the race.
May 24, 2017 at 14:01 #1301968With all due respect to the late Many Clouds I am shocked by this if I am honest, fair enough if you are giving him and Thistlecrack their respective top rating from the Cotswold Chase but lets have a look at who finished third in that race beaten 17L, it was Smad Place.
Smad Place’s next race was the Gold Cup where he was beaten some 27L by Sizing John and yet Sizing John is rated 2lbs less than Many Clouds and 1lb less than Thistlecrack – Sherwood’s reaction to the news sums it up best: ‘You’re joking’
May 24, 2017 at 14:26 #1301970Or alternatively, you could call it rancid sentimentality.
I’m not quite sure where I stand in the dispute and I think it’s a bit unseemly to have a slanging match about a dead horse. I suspect both of the extreme sides of the argument are wrong, maybe the answer is somewhere in the middle.
May 25, 2017 at 08:43 #1302021Really pleased to see Many Clouds achieve this he truly gave his all in every race he ran.
Of course there will be differences of opinion but in respect of his connections and the memory of Many Clouds all I would like to say is well done himself.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...May 26, 2017 at 08:40 #1302099Ratings are supposed to be compiled objectively and I can’t honestly see how on the balance of form Many Clouds has come out above Sizing John. It does reek of sentimentality.
Arguably, however the staying chase performance of the season was by Our Duke in the Irish National.
May 26, 2017 at 13:11 #1302124Sentiment rules here I suspect. Given that there was nothing between Many Clouds and Thistlecrack at Cheltenham surely they should have been on the same mark, assuming that race is taken as the season measure. That said, what a great shame Many Clouds isn’t still around to prove the matter one way or another. Given that he isn’t then it doesn’t really matter anyway, and does give us a prominent reminder of a great competitor.
