Smooth Escort was a maiden when he won the 4 miler in 1991, as was Topsham Bay the year before.
Not sure if either of them had won a point mind.
February 16, 2009 at 23:54 #210605I was watching the racing yesterday and remembered that I’ve got an ante post ticket on the win-less Black Jarcari for the triumph hurdle

Has any maiden horse ever won at the festival?
Ebaziyan was just about not a maiden when winning the supreme novice in 2007 having scraped home by a length in a weak maiden, at the time rated pretty much identically to black jacari over hurdles.
Black Jacaris form has got progressively worse in line with the ground getting progressively worse, and where it is possible that he may yet improve again with the ground on a balance of his flat and hurdles form I dont quite think he would be suited to the pace of the triumph.
It is entirely possible however that as a result of poor runs on poor ground that (rated 115 or thereabouts) he may have more to show when the ground improves and king does have his fired up for cheltenham. Hard to see him winning the fred winter but stranger things have happened.
February 16, 2009 at 23:56 #210606I’ve got Black Jacari at 16/1 also after his first run over hurdles at Rasen.
Fancy a pint??
I’m sure you don’t need to be told this but BJ won’t even be going to the festival… he’s off for a holiday…
fwiw – we bet big on him long before Market Rasen off the back of yard confidence and have had months of training fees to go with it… got a spare couple of quid to buy me a pint?
February 17, 2009 at 00:02 #210607Any chance he’s off to Battersea for his holidays?
February 17, 2009 at 00:22 #210609Im not 100% sure but i belive Baron Blakeney was a maiden winner at the festival.
Also Rare Holiday won the triumph hurdle in 1990 for Dermot Weld and was another maiden winner.February 17, 2009 at 02:14 #210632Baron Blakeney won a maiden hurdle at Wincanton on Kingwell Hurdle day before his Triumph success – and also a novice at Worcester under a penalty.
That win by Melnik on an extra day after the Festival was on a card added to celebrate Red Nose Day. Various people paid sums to charity to act as the starter, commentator, judge etc for one of the races.

Anyone know what Jane Stickels paid?
February 17, 2009 at 03:19 #210645I think River Ceiriog was a maiden when he won the Supreme Novices’ in 1985.
I was thinking of that one, set someone on their way to a nice jackpot in 86
