Unfortunately he had to be put down after pulling up in the Pertemps.
March 17, 2011 at 20:20 #345802That is very sad news, he was such a lovely horse. Any news on why he was put down? Looked like it could’ve been an internal problem?
RIP such a beautiful animal

No. RUK only said he’d been put down and RP list it as "fatally injured".
March 17, 2011 at 21:28 #345815Just read on the AnimalAid site that sadly he suffered a hind leg injury.
Tragic loss RIP
March 17, 2011 at 21:53 #345821It was his stifle. Animal Aid are making much of it … even have photos of his "last moments" – actually they show him being led into the horse ambulance.
The 2011 Cheltenham Festival claimed its first equine victim on the third day of the event, when Lush Life was destroyed after being pulled up with a damaged right hind leg. With the organisers apparently keen to avoid the embarrassment of having to erect tell-tale green screens in front of the large crowd, the six-year-old is understood to have met his fate in a quiet part of the Gloucestershire course.
Animal Aid’s Horse Racing Consultant, Dene Stansall, was at the side of the course and witnessed Lush Life’s injury: ‘It was distressing to see Lush Life clearly in such great pain. He was drawn, hobbling, into the horsebox and taken on a journey across the course away from the crowds. It’s disgraceful that these horses are made to suffer and die at courses like Cheltenham. It’s little wonder that those responsible seem to do their best to keep the whole thing out of sight of the paying public.’
He doesn’t seem (or maybe want) to acknowledge that Lush Life was being helped and would have been taken back to the stables to be assessed properly by the vet.
Such a shame he couldn;t be saved. RIP Lush Life.March 17, 2011 at 21:55 #345822Just read on the AnimalAid site that sadly he suffered a hind leg injury.

Wretched Animal Aid – took photos of him being boxed up and then put out a press release claiming it was so they didn’t have to put him down in front of the crowd. Would never occur to them that everyone would really rather save a horse if they can, and that he was taken off for x-rays.
March 17, 2011 at 22:26 #345828I looked at the Animal Aid site, they don’t know much about animals, it’s all political.
I have a student this year who is involved loosely with the organisation & sorry to say he knows nothing about animals, especially horses.
They probably don’t know that they have an equine medical centre at the course or that the trainer & owners would want to save him if they could.March 17, 2011 at 22:39 #345832As someone who loves animals, especially horses, the likes of Animal Aid disgust me and bring genuine animal welfare campaigns into disrepute. The spin they put on Lush Life’s last moments would do Goebbels proud. Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of racing knows that Lush Life was being brought to the equine centre in the hope of being saved, even in the photos the veterinary surgeons are clearly visible by their jackets. It always strikes me that the only group of people who seem to want racehorses killed, especially at the big meetings, are Animal Aid.
It annoys me that people who genuinely care about horses are giving funds to this organisation when they are needed by the likes of World Horse Welfare, where they will be spent on horses not politics.

I absolutely agree. I felt so outraged reading the article on poor lush lifes last moments. The poor horse was been given the best chance possible and yet they have to put their own twisted spin on it.
They are so unrealistic it’s embarrassing and infuriating to read.

talented and died doing what he loved
thoughts go out to the connections at this time ….
March 18, 2011 at 10:43 #345933I do think that Animal Aid got the wrong end of the stick so to speak, but they do highlight how many horses die on the racecourse and you can’t ignore the appalling statistics. I know all the about the racing industry as I have been part of it for 40 years, but it doesn’t mean I don’t realise there are lots wrong with it. RIP all those wonderful horses who die whilst giving us enjoyment….
March 18, 2011 at 11:59 #345957What annoys me is that Animal Aid almost seem pleased when such an event happens, whereas we are all praying for it not to. I would imagine that the injury to Lush Life could have happened out in the field
. I do wish that they knew how much love and respect so many of us racegoers have for the horses. And, if they had respect for the horse they wouldn’t gleefully publish photo’s of it in distress.

Well said.
