Strong contender for thread of the year, JG.
And is it me or has Behest shown enough at Hereford and Uttoxeter on her last two starts to suggest there’s a dire 2m handicap hurdle "within her compass"?
September 15, 2010 at 17:06 #317670Shall we have the current lowest rated Flatties whilst we’re at it? Why not indeed…
BERRY POMEROY (Liam Grassick)………. 3
MAKARTHY (Paul Green)……………… 9
BECKY QUICK (Bruce Hellier)………… 9
CALDERS (Alan Berry)……………… 10
KIRKUM (Diana Weeden)…………….. 10
IMMACOLATA (Alan Berry)…………… 10
CALL OF KTULU (Snowy Wainwright)…… 12(15 and upwards the remainder)
Take Kirkum out of the picture (did show some glimmers in bumpers), and the remainder have raced 24 times collectively and beaten eight horses between them.
Calders, incidentally, is a half-sister to Fantasy Believer, 104-rated at best and able to number a Rous stakes among 17 career victories. Similarly, Kirkum’s half-sibs include 2006 County Hurdle winner Desert Quest and Listed UAE mile winner Jonquil. Rarely has Terry Norman’s "Elvis’s brother was a baker" maxim proven so true…

September 15, 2010 at 17:10 #317671What is noteworthy, however, is that in being 25lb "wrong", Chestnut Ben had to race off a mark of 63, compared to his actual, eye-watering rating of
just 38
.
The BHA ratings database has been updated to reveal that Chestnut Ben’s punishment for that win is to be raised from 38 to 71, a hike of two stones and five pounds by my maths.
The inevitable spin-off question, then – does anyone know what’s the single biggest amount by which a horse has ever been raised?

September 15, 2010 at 20:21 #317700GC,
Amongst horses that we’d all recognise, Looks Like Trouble stands out. He was raised 26lbs in one jump for his Sun Alliance Chase win, but his exploits the following season meant that he had gone up 55lbs (115 to 170) between March 1999 and March 2000.
But I suspect the winner is one you’ll relish, a horse that went up 37lbs (80 to 117) following a win on his first outing after a change of stable – Venn Ottery.
Though to be fair, that rise was based on two runs, the novice chase win followed a week later by a handicap wun under a 7lb penalty before he was reassessed. But he was bumped up again to 149 after his run in the Champion Chase, so he actually went up 69lbs in the space of four weeks.

September 15, 2010 at 20:44 #317706GC,
I’ll throw it back to you as well – can you name the horse that was raised 31lbs for a win over hurdles, then later in his career, was also raised 31lbs over fences for a single run.
It was in the 90’s.

September 15, 2010 at 20:54 #317711Not content to train 2 of the worst flat horses in training Alan Berry also bought Call of Ktulu for 50,000gns in Ireland. He certainly has an eye for bloodstock.

Ah yes, the virtues of being run in a much-needed tongue-tie. Not rocket science, Mr Carter!
Totally stumped at present over the horse raised 31lb twice over, though I suspect it’s going to prove to be a pretty guessable one ultimately. Wasn’t something like a Grand National winner, was it?

September 16, 2010 at 11:04 #317779GC,
It was a Bob Buckler inmate called See Enough, who thrived in heavy ground.
He won the Rendlesham Hurdle when it was a limited handicap from 38lbs out of the handicap at 100/1, and went up from 116 to 147 for his pains.
But I misled you, as he never did go up the same over fences – he did run consecutive chases off 106 and 137, but I failed to spot last night that the second race was from 31lbs out of the handicap!
Apologies – I knew about the hurdle escapade as I wrote about it in Odds On around that time, but I misread the form on the chases.
Sorry, AP

STREET CRED (Paul Burgoyne)……….. 10
CALL OF KTULU (Snowy Wainwright)…… 1215 and upwards the remainder. Mr Shammie is a new entry, having failed to beat anything home in three starts to date (last seen beaten 52l in a Leicester 7f seller). I’m not actually sure why this one’s not so much as had a try over 5f-6f so far (only further), given the prevalence of competency at sprint distances on the damside. Ah well. Street Cred is also new to the list, following a third successive last of 12 finish on the Polytrack a fortnight ago, and clearly isn’t threatening to shape up into anything like the animal her 10-time winning half-brother General Feeling was. Mass balloting, or a split, will be required for her to make her nursery debut at Kempton on Thursday.

ONE STEP CLOSER (Linda Jewell).. 48
CALL ME DAVE (John Long)…….. 48
ELLANDSHE (Willie Young)…….. 50Chesnut Ben and Behest are now 73- and 64-rated respectively following their recent improved form. Tend to agree with Gumshield above that winning something over 2m isn’t wholly beyond Behest, though it’ll have to be something absolutely desperate.

ONE STEP CLOSER (Linda Jewell).. 48
HAZELBURY (Nigel Hawke)……… 49
ELLANDSHE (Willie Young)…….. 50The Client, a manifestly average half-brother to dual Charisma Gold Cup winner Bank Avenue, now tops the chasers list after showing nothing on his return from a year off at Wetherby recently. However, David Pearson, who was and may still be master of the High Peak hunt (who race over the stone walls at Flagg Moor), still has the option of sending him point-to-pointing, and I’d proffer that weak Maidens in that sphere would be a more sensible target for him now (and there are usually plenty of those in Pearson’s nearest localities of the North West and Midlands Areas).

Ellandshe was way too clever to fall over fences and has spent years pootling round looking after himself. He did get Brought Down in a race won by Mumbles Head at Newcastle and Unseated at Sedgefield in a Hunter Chase in 2011 though I suspect there may have been a bit of RFO in that! He kept some fair company at times, finishing behind notables such as Knockara Beau and Noble Alan.
Presumably kept up with the stable’s other slowcoaches on the gallops!

…Of which there are more than a few! I do like Willie (and now Willie Junior’s) modus operandi, though, which seems to be why fork out more than £600 on a racehorse when the money could be better spent turning our property into a really, really good Point-to-Point venue.

All perfectly true, and there is a glimmer – just a glimmer, mind – of something to work with.
Retribution from the assessor for that Towcester run has duly followed, by the way, in the form of a 43lb rise to 56.
