Does anyone remember we talked ages ago about these really spooky programmes that were on the telly years ago; Lost Hearts was the one that I remember the best. Well, I’ve just seen that they’re now out on DVD. Not sure that I’ve got the courage to buy or watch them, though….
September 29, 2012 at 18:42 #414600I recall the chat Moe. The Beeb’s interpretations of M.R. James’s ghost stories remain ‘all time favourites’ of mine and I’m very glad they’ve been released on DVD. Recommended without reservation, though the chilling spookiness has never been equalled. So perhaps, a ‘beware X certificate’ may be in order.
Most, including the truly terrifying ‘Lost Hearts’, date from the 1970s but there’ve been three more made in recent years – ‘A View From A Hill’, ‘Number 13’ and a remake of ‘Whistle And I’ll Come To You’; all of which manage to evoke the unsettling, stark and ambiguous nature of the originals very well.
unjustified and ancient
September 29, 2012 at 21:45 #414617Both the 1968 and 2010 version of Oh Whistle and I’ll come to you are on one dvd. Given that I still think of Lost Hearts when I’m on my own at night and everytime I go anywhere that has a folly temple like building [just outside Loughborough and another off the A1 going oop north; not to mention a National Trust place we went to just outside Newcastle]I don’t know if I dare even own the dvd’s let alone watch them. And, do I want to inflict such terror on anyone that hasn’t seen them before? I’m also still searching for dvd’s of Pathfinders the Mars and Venus which I think may now exist as well; also a picture book of Lad, A Dog which my mum threw away. When I find all of these my whole raison d’etre will be gone and they might as well jetison me up into space a la Timothy Leary with the lot of them.
September 29, 2012 at 23:25 #414624Many years ago (70’s I think … I was only a kid), there was a series on the TV called ‘Beasts’ and the short stories it showed scared the hell out of me. One episode in particular was about a couple who finds a strange fossil (or something like that) and eerie things start to happen. The ending nearly gave me nightmares.

Can one ever be sure if they’ve nearly had a nightmare? Hmmm.
September 30, 2012 at 00:25 #414627I think so Mr Pilsen. When one becomes wary of going to bed after seeing something scary and the fear of dreaming about it plays on your mind and stirs the imagination, it nearly becomes a nightmare because one wakes up in the middle of that night and still feels the same dose of fear which stays with you before sleep took over.
September 30, 2012 at 08:10 #414639Alas, the series is still not part of the Mystery and Imagination series that I first saw; unfortunately only a couple of those survive and Lost Hearts is lost forever [other than in my memory]. The problem with the story is that the most fearful part of it involves things happening when one goes to bed and should be in the safety of one’s bedroom. Ooo’er…..The Demon Lover is another one that terrified me, and that isn’t on these dvd’s. From what I can remember a man sells his wife to a ghoul in exchange for something or other and the last scene shows her having to go to the crypt where her fate awaits her. Men; pah..you’re’allthesame….I still haven’t had the courage to see The Woman in Black, either.
November 25, 2012 at 16:44 #420839Not sure if this is what you were referring to Moe, but the complete series of Ghost Stories, including Lost Hearts is available on a 5-DVD set from Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ghost-Stories-C … 208&sr=1-1
As are what still exists of the Mystery and Imagination series

Both will hopefully be ‘neath the shedding pine on Christmas morning
