I was very surprised to find Lossiemouth listed as an entry in the Pertemps Hurdle Qualifier at Market Rasen next Wednesday.

Because like most people I suppose, I’d forgotten all about Lossiemouth (GB), who won three novice hurdles for Tom Lacey, the last a Grade 2 at Sandown, in late 2021. Back when Lossiemouth (FR) was just a 2-y-old, yet to appear on a racecourse.

Lossiemouth (GB) returns to action after his three year layoff, now trained by Polly Gundry, but still in the colours of owner/breeder Lady Cobham.

So on the TRF ten to follow you have two shots with the same name :good:

The more I know the less I understand.

That’s a great fact HCMW! I don’t recall it from the time either.

Yarmouth in the nineties was obviously the place for this sort of thing, as it’s also where two horses named Averti ran in the same race in 1994. Averti (IRE) was fifth, and Averti (USA) was sixth.

Two horses named Exchequer were declared in a handicap at Musselburgh in 2020, and were due to meet each other even after the race was divided but were allocated places in different divisions of the race. Two named Averti, one a colt and one a filly, met each other at Yarmouth in 1994 while Ginistrelli and Ginistrelli(USA) met each other there in 1979.

In OZ name change is forced on import if duplicate still racing , mostly Our put in front ,or Mr like Mr Waterville in case ex Ballydoyle horse . Scriptwriter was completely changed tp More Felons .
Do they still have a ” watch your bets ” section in national newspapers if two horses have similar names ??

There was a case of two horses with the same name running in the same race as recently as June 2022, when two horses named Sierra Nevada contested a maiden at Gowran Park. The one trained by Jessica Harrington won the race.

HCMW, the female Averti was Cecil-trained. She came home in sixth that day, one place behind her male counterpart, who was trained by Willie Muir.

The male Averti went on to become a high-class sprinter who won the King George Stakes and was placed in the Abbaye and the Nunthorpe. The female Averti was not quite in his league, but managed to win a couple of conditions events.

Interesting to hear of these further examples. It seems clashes of duplicate names are not that uncommon, especially at Yarmouth for some reason!

Iam amazed at how many examples there are , tens thousamds horses , tens thousands races worldwide it seems crazy these coincidences occur and not one offs .
I know duplicate names exist a lot but its landing in same race , or same day etc thats weird .
I do know there was a Winx in India same time she was going round , he couldnt win a maiden at Pune but thats just a straight copy of name , these examples pure coincidence .

With technology as it is nowadays, there’s no practical reason why the international racing authorities couldn’t maintain a single global database of names.

One excuse sometimes given is that there aren’t enough different names to go round. I think this is a poor reason though as the range of potential names is as good as infinite, even if the length is capped at 18 characters.

Id back the Mullins one in a match race as the other has a driver and sulky to drag along.
