I know this is an odd question (and before anyone says ‘Google it’, I am doing) but which racecourse in the UK has the longest bend/turn?

Anyone know? It’s for a project I’m working on.

(Failing that, the shortest straight. It’s looking like Chester or Pontefract or maybe York so far)

The ones that spring to my mind are these

Doncasters turn from Rose Hill to the home straight.

York the turn away from the stands

Epsom from the 1m area down to the home straight.

    Thanks for that.

Doncaster fits the bill of what I was looking for.

Surely Chester, most of the track is on a bend!

Fair comment. Although I think of a bend as leading into a straight while Chester doesn’t have much of a straight, it’s basically a circle!

If you’re wondering why I asked, I’ve been messing around designing a racecourse where all the bases are covered & in order to fit the all weather circuit in, I’ve ended up having a turf course with stupidly long bends. Comparing it to Donny, I think I’ve gotten away with it.

If Doncaster qualifies, with its 15f circuit and 4f straight, surely Pontefract trumps it?

Just get rid of the all-weather circuit. Job’s a good ‘un.

I think the turn into the home straight is fairly short , it’s more like five straights connected with short bends although having said that the bend coming out of the home straight is pretty long (if underused). I’ll have a measure when I get home.

Mind you, the size of Pontefract you could get a flat course, jumps, all weather, a circus & a reasonably sized village in the middle of it & still have room for a pop concert!

    Anthony,

Do you mind me asking what your project is?

Might Bangor fit your crieria?. There is a continuous bend from the 2 mile chase start to the straight of the run in to the post which must be about 3/4’s of a mile.

    Anthony,

    Not at all.

I should point out it’s for no reason other than my own interest but I’m seeing if it would be possible to build a course that has independent jumps, flat turf & AW courses without the focus of one reducing the attributes of the other.

I’m looking at site lines for spectators, the view of the jumps for spectators, a fair galloping flat course & anything else that springs to mind.

At the moment I have a turf oval of 12f for the jumps (with two 4f straights), a turf oval for the flat (Two 2f straights, two 2f bends) & a standard one mile AW course on the inside.

I’m using a programme called Trainz which as the name suggests, is a rail simulator but it also has the most user friendly ‘world building’ system that I think it’s possible to have. If were in such an industry, I’d honestly recommend it as a design tool.
