Zarkander and Medinas are the uninspiring selection. I suppose Aubusson is improving but 7/1 about a horse that has a lot to find on bare form with the rider not able to use her claim. Looks poorish value.

December 20, 2014 at 12:17 #499044No bet for me Sir, was going to bet Aubusson myself, but I’ll just enjoy the race without a bet.
Good luck with yours.
December 20, 2014 at 12:34 #499050Zarkandar for me. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win this with a little to spare.
It’s rare to see a G1 horse going off odds-against versus handicappers and G3/weak G2 animals.
December 20, 2014 at 14:48 #499061What a wonderful race they served up, great to see Reve De Sivola land the hat-trick and Daryl Jacob answer a few critics.
There are some terribly harsh comments on Sam Twiston-Davies around social media. Although Zarkandar is a bit of an awkward horse, he’s never hinted that he might dog it quite so badly.
December 20, 2014 at 15:49 #499072Having being all over Zarkander at what I thought was generous odds-against, I am stunned in honesty. Hurdled ultra-slick (save two slight mishaps) and must have traded at 1.01. Criticism of SWC is wide of the mark for me, hindsight is marvellous but who expected him to curl up like that?
EDIT – Daryl Jacob enjoyed that. I bet Paul Nicholls is seething.
December 20, 2014 at 16:30 #499079I can’t see how anyone could fault STD. Zarkandar just folded once in front.
December 20, 2014 at 16:49 #499080I won’t blame Twiston-Davies on his ride. Zarkandar seemed full of gas while jumping the last, whereas Rêve de Sivola was already being shaken… How not to be confident at this moment? Who would have thought then that Zarkandar would finish behind RDS?
The thing is Nick Williams’s horse is one the gamest around and he is never better when he has some runners ahead of him in the run-in.December 20, 2014 at 16:56 #499081EDIT – Daryl Jacob enjoyed that. I bet Paul Nicholls is seething.
Jacob was a class act in victory too. He even praised Zarkandar and thanked Nicholls for the opportunities he received on that horse.
I get the impression that this grace will make Nicholls privately seethe all the more!
December 20, 2014 at 17:01 #499084I make you right TYF.
Not my cuppa Mr. Nicholls. Although I am still trying to compute how I have done my dough, I can’t help but tip my fedora to Jacobs. Well done sir.
December 20, 2014 at 18:25 #499094Didn’t have a bet and very rarely criticise jocks, but STD had nothing at all to lose in holding onto him for much longer. Horse has always been a bit quirky – why give him the chance to idle?
December 20, 2014 at 19:04 #499097Disagree. If he’d have done that and pulled a ‘Harchi’ I would have been annoyed. He gave him a chance to win his race nicely. The horse let him down and must be squiggle material.

Harchibald’s problem was well known, and he wasn’t an idler so much, imo, as he simply found nil off the bridle.

Has he lost because he idled?? In fairness to the horse, he used to be very reliable in a battle and Ruby was never afraid to make plenty use of him. Im as surprised as anybody that he could travel that well and yet get beaten. I just wonder if he got some time off after his French Exploits. Time off he might have paid for in the final strides. Just a suggestion.

December 20, 2014 at 22:23 #499118There’s no doubt in my mind he lost it through idling. Blinkers might have backfired for once in that he didn’t see RDS until it was too late. He definitely picked up again, but was simply too late having lost such momentum.
I think he’s always been tricky, having idled up the hill even in his Triumph win.
December 20, 2014 at 23:18 #499121Zarkandar almost certainly lost the race through dogging it/idling. The fact that he fought back and regained some ground after being passed by Reve De Sivola showed he had plenty left to offer.
I found it funny that Reve De Sivola’s connections feel their horse has been underappreciated by the media. "He’s won six Grade Ones, but no-one ever talks about him as a top, top horse." That might be because he’s picked up six of the weakest Grade Ones imaginable, game and solid though he undoubtedly is. Just a thought.
