I do like to have a midweek play on this race, but it’s very difficult this year.
As De Mee and Sharp Response would be big fancies, but both look to have other priorities at Aintree and Kelso respectively.
Doesn’t make things that much easier though……

At their very best, both Houblon Des Obeaux and Step Back would be the clear picks.
Houblon has certainly paid the price for his heroics round here the last 12 months, but he’s just too difficult to ignore. It would be easy to write him off here for his rise in the weights, but there’s just a suspicion that he’s got one last big run in him, and I’d give him a strong chance.
Conversely, Step Back hasn’t had a great 12 months, and his very impressive win in The 2018 Bet365 Gold Cup, now seems a long time ago. He is coming back down the weights though, and his run in this year’s renewal was a definite step in the right direction.
The other one to really jump out is the Richard Rowe trained Dark Flame. He never truly threatened Houblon here last time, but it was a fine comeback off of a fair old layoff. The 14’s makes a fair bit of appeal.
Last year’s winner Morney Wing wouldn’t be a forlorn hope at 20’s, while both Caroles Destrier and Le Breuil look a tad overpriced.
Royal Vacation is a hard horse to catch right, but he also looks to have a live chance, but as good a chance as that it, I won’t be playing him at current price, given his unpredictability.
The quintet of
Shanroe Santos
Vinnie Lewis
Potters Legend
Get On The Yager
Milansbarshould all relish this test, and have a chance if in a going day, but they just add to the confusion.
Houblon Des Obeaux and Dark Flame would be my main choices right now, but I’ll definitely sit this out until Final Decs.
December 4, 2019 at 23:24 #1476561Too many sharing entries with Aintree, so best waiting. I’ll never abandon my old friend Houby after all we’ve been through! Even if he looks weighted out of this.
December 4, 2019 at 23:35 #1476563Same here Peter, I’ll definitely be with him if he goes. Just a question of him still being good enough off of that mark.
It’s definitely not out of the question.
December 5, 2019 at 13:36 #1476584Me neither Peter and VTC. I have been backing him since I was in short pants.
December 5, 2019 at 14:33 #1476587I proper fancy one in this folks!!
I have been backing it since he prices come out at 10/1 and I think come race day it will be half that price.POTTERS LEGEND of Lucy Wadham’s was thought good enough to contest the Ladbroke last season and went on to win well at Haydock in a class 2 handicap. I think having an over hurdles first time out and then third in a Grade 3 behind West Approach. Looks a good stayer in the making and I AM ON!!
Just hope it turns up now LOL
December 6, 2019 at 17:55 #1476660Such a good renewal, and it was very tough to ditch Dark Flame and Sharp Response.
I’ll stick with this pair….
Houblon Des Obeaux win
Caroles Destrier EW 4 PlacesDecember 6, 2019 at 20:38 #1476685Purely sentimental selections for me in Houblon Des Obeaux and Royal Vacation. Always enjoy this race even with my terrible record!
December 7, 2019 at 10:19 #1476724I was quite keen on Get on the Yager for the two months ago at Cheltenham. I’m willing to forgive that run and give him another chance here. I think this is his optimal trip and he is definitely on a nice mark now.
Get on the Yager 14/1 EW
December 7, 2019 at 11:17 #1476736AS PL hasn’t turned up I thought I better have a go!!
Have backed SHARP RESPONSE at 8/1 and CONINGSBY at 16/1 both four places.
December 7, 2019 at 11:37 #1476739Edit: wrong topic.
December 7, 2019 at 12:07 #1476754Dragon d’Estruval win only for an interest for me.
December 7, 2019 at 12:48 #1476762Yager is a good e.w shout , played this along with classic Ben
December 7, 2019 at 15:46 #1476794YELLOW FLAG=VOID RACE
December 7, 2019 at 15:47 #1476795Well that was horrible. You wonder how many more times you can stand to see it. Utter sickener.
December 7, 2019 at 15:48 #1476796Only logical decision to void the race. Screens were put up on the wrong side of the horse. Horses might have crashed into poor Houblon
December 7, 2019 at 15:49 #1476797Absolutely heartbreaking, rip Houblon. Legend of a horse.
December 7, 2019 at 15:53 #1476799I think we all feel we’ve lost an old friend today.
