Just wondered if anyone has a strong opinion on this today?

It is the sort of race I usually get involved with, but just can’t work it out. I’ve always been a fan of Sixties Icon, and it’s good to see him on the way back after a breathing op., but can’t help feeling that today’s trip will prove much too short for him.

That leads me to think that Blue Ksar at the prices is the better bet, despite Sixties Icon being the class horse in the race.

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

    Ben.

    Yes,

don’t go to Salisbury to see Sixties Icon because it is at Goodwood.

Sixties has by far the best form but that is over further. If it is a good pace should still be good enough.
Blue Ksar is usually at his best first time up but bit of a doubt on the going for me. Might be able to dictate the pace.
Spice Route is the one most likely to run to form but would not want a slow pace.
Sweet Lily is of poor temperament but would probably have the best turn of foot if it came to a sprint.

Thanks Mark – yes, bit confused there, of course it’s Goodwood.

Think a watching brief might be the best policy – would want around 6-4 on Sixties Icon I think…

Having looked at the race I think he’ll thump them and his current price is more than fair.

Blue Ksar is best on softer ground, Spice Route will inevitably run ok but is a listed horse at best, sweet lily is what DJ would call a dog and the otehr horse will need to improve out of sight.

Sixties Icon is a proven group performer who does have a turn of foot and made a very encouraging return I thought – If I was making the tissue he would be 4/6 probably in spite of the distance. I always thought he won the leger because of his class – He’s a 1m 4f horse in reality.

That is very interesting, as last year’s St Leger winner Lucarno is also a 1m4f horse in reality. Is this a growing trend with the 21st century St Leger?

I think he should win too. That was a nice return and a good race to bring him back to his racing senses.

I think it’s been a trend on and off for a long while – plenty of the Leger winners from history have been flexible middle distance animals, or we would never have had Triple Crown winners.

They can be good over 1m6f and just as competitive over 1m4f – if they had to stick to the Leger distance then they would not have much to aim at.

Some like Classic Cliche, Millenary and Bollin Eric do go on to be Cup horses – more frequently they will drop back in trip. Scorpion and Silver Patriarch won the Coronation Cup, Shantou won 2 subsequent Gr.1s and a Gr.2 over 12f, Snurge won the Canadian International. Classic Cliche and Newadi were second in King Georges, User Friendly was second in the Arc, Milan was second in the BC Turf.

    It’s nothing new.

Its shortened up now, but anything at or above evens for Sixties Icon would be serious value on form. He’s the only Group 1 horse in the race, has done it recently, the track had a stamina bias yesterday which will suit and Ryan Moore can be flexible with tactics given the horses staying power.

Blue Tsar is a group 2 horse on all known form and cant see much improvement from him at 5. This trip on watered ground will stretch him. Frankie may try to nick it from the front but Moore is one of the few you can trust tactically most of the time.

Spice Route is listed class, Ballintini looks a handicapper. One for future reference may be Sweet Lilly, UK form is nothing special but 3 lengths behind subsequent Group 1 winner Sun Classique at Nad Al Sheba in Feb is good foreign form.

If its a slow run affair you may get the evens in running.
