bluemanc43’s superb collection of videos on Youtube has been well documented on here before, but one of the more recent videos contains jumping action from the old configuration of Lingfield Park before the All Weather track went in. I’ve been looking for an example of this for ages. This race has a curious finish!

Fantastic – the days when it was a proper racecourse, before it was desecrated.

    Spot on Paul.

I had totally forgotten the old configuration of the course.

    Before it was Improved.

Back in those days it was just a glorified PTP course as signified by the caravans in the background, slow running horses falling over and dog running loose.

Now it is our premier AW track hosting the Winter Derby as well as being a dual purpose turf course.

Scores of meetings all year round, Hotel and business facilities on site, golf course, health spa, concerts, fireworks, the lot.

Somebody has to lead for the rest to follow.

Ah, those far-off days when Graham Goode was awake and enjoying life in the commentary box treating us to his plummy accent reminiscent of Trevor Howard’s and Celia Johnson’s in

    Brief Encounter

    nice :)

Does anyone remember the old Bic Razor (Lingfield Park) Gold Cup – a 2 1/2 mile handicap hurdle held on the Saturday after Chelters? Was a decent pot at one time then was slowly put to sleep once the AW track was installed?

    Yes, I have the following:

    (1990-1995 meetings not televised)

The 1990 meeting was run on the AW. After that it reverted to turf under various different sponsors up until 2001.

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

It seems to have started out as the plain "Bic Razors Handicap Hurdle" in 1984 – there was no equivalent race at the meeting in previous years.

The Gold Cup element was added the following year.

1989 was the final running under Bic sponsorship.

1990 running took place on the AW track.

1991 Back on the turf as Lingfield Gold Cup H’cap Hurdle

Several poor years followed with small fields. 2000 provided an improvement with increased prize money and a 16 runner field.

    2001 Final running

....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.

It would have been known as "Lovely Lingfield" or "Leafy Lingfield" back in 1985. It was quite a picturesque place to visit and I went there a couple of times in the early 1980s on Grand National day. It used to televise well too in the old ITV and BBC days.
Certainly nothing lovely or leafy about it now. Desecrated is the right word.

Was amazed to see that all the races on today’s card at Lingfield were run on turf, highly unusual nowadays.

I think 5th and 21st September meetings will also be turf only. Don’t get too excited though, unfortunately the new AW surface should be ready by the 17th October meeting. :|
