Working on the speed figures for Lingfield this morning, when I came to the 2.20 1m5f race won by impressively by Urban Castle, and I was looking at one of the top speed figure anomalies I have ever seen on the all-weather.
In a nutshell, ever horse in this listed race had suddenly improved by 15lbs.
1. the time of the race was correct, I timed it with a stop watch.
2. the Racing Post standard time of 2m 40.50s is correct
3. I dialled in the going allowance for the surface at 0.15s/f (standard), I am happy with that.
4. the speed figures for the other races on the card looked about right. So all I am left with is a query on the actual race distance of 1m5f, Timeform had already flagged up that the original 2m race distance was suspect, it was measured and found to be only 1m7f169y.
The speed figure I had for Urban Castle of 91, will be reduced by 15lbs to 76 which is 1lb about the top speed figure of 75 I already have for Urban Castle.
I am confused on this one…

November 1, 2015 at 23:26 #1220024The Lingfield 1m5f was resurveyed in 2014 and the start was found to be in the correct place.
If the surface has been damaged by the starting stalls in the correct position they may have moved them up closer to the winning post. That dodge is common in USA.
Only Galway, despite all the moaning, give the actual race distances they race over on the day.
Why cannot BHA make this a rule?November 2, 2015 at 09:00 #1220059Why cannot BHA make this a rule?
The BHA do have this link on their website which I visit daily.
http://www.britishhorseracing.com/race-info/fixtures/fixture-updates/#goingPrior to racing I re-calculate the standard times for any rail movements over
the jumps. The recent re-measurements of the national hunt racecourses was a waste of time and
money, one of the worse examples regarding rail movements was from the last meeting held
at Fakenham where you had to add 200yds to one of the advertise distances. What difference would 200yds make to a time man…
