What a farcical race. I can only imagine the terribly judged rides from Hayley Turner and Eddie Ahern will land them in the stewards room.
I had not a penny on the race but was watching with keen interest and fair play to Jim Crowley on Contest he was well aware to the race pace and gave Contest a good ride.
January 10, 2009 at 20:19 #203010I watched it by mistake….it has reminded me why i wouldn;t normally watch! Shocking days racing from the "face of the Derby" *
* I can only imagine that they mean the Old Firm Derby.
January 10, 2009 at 21:19 #203019I know Hayley likes to bring Aeroplane swopping from the rear of the pack but that was plain stupid.
Too far behind and pretty much gave the win away
January 10, 2009 at 21:43 #203032Sorry, Halfwaytoheaven, can’t agree it was stupid. Please see my thread PMT.
January 10, 2009 at 21:52 #203033Was Eddie also suffering from PMT then on Bonus?
January 10, 2009 at 21:57 #203034Good point David, but I don’t think he’s stupid either. He was probably taking his lead from Hayley. Mistake.
January 10, 2009 at 22:30 #203039Dreadful rides from both Turner and Ahern.. They were both so preoccupied with getting a good tactical position relative to the other in the early stages that they forgot to notice that 3 of the others had kicked 20 lengths clear of them!
C’est la vie – we all make mistakes and to be fair, Hayley Turner has been exceptional on Aeroplane of late….

Ahern has also been exceptional fo late on Bonus, but in a different sense.
January 10, 2009 at 23:16 #203052There have been many exceptional rides from Eddie Ahern on the polytrack over the years. A master of his craft.
January 10, 2009 at 23:37 #203062Shocking ride from Hayley it must be said, but the ride on Bonus was in a different league, as Eddie Ahern was still taking a pull after turning into the straight, despite being twelve lengths plus behind the winner.
January 11, 2009 at 00:00 #203071Does anyone know if any inquiry was held? The rides look a clear violation of rule 156 (iv)
Where, in the opinion of the Stewards or the HRA, a horse has not achieved its best possible placing because one of the circumstances detailed below arose but the Stewards or the HRA are satisfied that there was no intentional disregard of the requirement that the horse be run on its merits, the Rider shall be deemed in breach of this Rule and guilty of an offence.
The said circumstances are:-
(i) failing to ride out approaching the finish on a horse that would have been placed first, second, third, fourth or any other placing for which there is prize money;
(ii) mistaking the race distance and either riding a finish too early or failing to ride a finish;
(iii) taking the wrong course;
(iv) asking for an effort or making some other permissible manoeuvre too late as a result of serious misjudgement or inattention.January 11, 2009 at 02:49 #203096

There was nothing sinister in both rides. Turn on The Style is an absolute speedball so Areoplane and Bonus wouldn’t of had the stamina in my opinion to chase him round into the straight THEN find another gear to the finishing line which Contest was abled to do, so it was wise to hold off the pace which both jockies did although it must be said their judgement was very bad but at the end of the day it was just the sheer difference in being a tough wiley old sprinter compared to Bonus who makes up the numbers in sprints races during the winter and Areoplane who simply does not get the trip.
January 11, 2009 at 02:57 #203098A fascinating analysis Mr Wilson.
