Steady on Gingerlover
I ask for nothing in return, though feel free to leave me in your will a lovingly hand-crafted copy of “THE TABLE OF ODDS AND CHANCES” printed in Copperplate Gothic Bold on Vellum
That, or a discourse on the Big Question: Why 85/40 and not 17/8 ?
December 17, 2021 at 11:31 #1572915Careful, Drone, that way lies “why 6/4 and not 3/2?” and we surely don’t want any of THAT sort of talk, do we?

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"December 17, 2021 at 11:42 #1572917You’re opening a can of worms here Drone.
Why do we write 10/3 but say a hundred to thirty?
Why is there no 19/8 when there is 11, 13,15 and, in effect, 17?
And just what happened to the likes of 100/7 which I believe I’ve seen in archive footage?
December 17, 2021 at 11:50 #1572918You have indeed, along with 100/8 and 100/6 – referred to as “the bits” and still occasionally requested by old school punters to old school bookmakers.

My first bet in kilbeggan in 1957 at the ripe old age of 7 was on a horse called little champ. At 100/7. I had. Whole shilling on it
I see sneaky davies has raised his snake head above the parapet
See you over Christmas
December 17, 2021 at 11:57 #1572921Not if I see you first, Richard!
Seek me out and attempt to chat to me if you wish, but you’d better have your best walking boots on to keep up and attempt a natter as I certainly won’t be breaking stride, never mind stopping, to chat to you.
Merry Christmas!

Afraid to have a chat
Typical
December 17, 2021 at 12:05 #1572924Tbh, Richard, I AM afraid – afraid a 70yo nutcase might BORE me to death.
I have a million more enjoyable things to do with my free time on a day out than chat to the likes of you.
It’s a free personal choice, civil liberties, thing – I’m sure you can relate to that.

December 17, 2021 at 14:45 #1572957As an aside I was delighted to see the Tories turn on this idiot yesterday
He has assumed the nation will obey him to the letter
Ruining the hospitality industry by his decree
Unelected dictatorlike twit
He needed reminding , he might rule johnson but he does not rule the nation
Im going out every night between now and Christmas
Up yours Whitty👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
December 17, 2021 at 15:10 #1572960‘Unelected’
So are we supposed to have elections for everyone and everything now? Who would be your preferred candidate?
December 17, 2021 at 15:20 #1572961I tend to think of Chris Whitty as seeming a rather nice chap, who never in his scientific career expected to have such fame thrust upon him, and who simply looks at the data and advises accordingly.
Better safe than sorry when you’ve got the safety of over 60 million lives on your hands.

10/3 & 100/30, 85/40 & 17/8, 3/2 & 6/4 are equivalences but the 100/x odds are different as by ‘taking the fractions’ – which can still be done on-course – you’re getting slightly better odds:
e.g:
14/1, take 100/7 or 14.28/1
12/1 take 100/8 or 12.5/1
8/1 take 100/12 or 8.3/1Bellowing “1000/120 the 3 horse” at a bookie was an enjoyable pursuit. Probably get knocked back nowadays
They were more mainstream prior to decimalisation in 1971
December 17, 2021 at 15:33 #1572964I witnessed the fractions being laid a couple of times at Barbury Point-to-Point last Sunday.
