“Should have won 15 on the trot.”
I should have stuck a grand on Norton’s Coin in the 1990 Gold Cup.
October 21, 2024 at 10:45 #1710518Easy to look impressive when you’re beating what are essentially plodders……
October 21, 2024 at 12:04 #1710519That’ll be the plodders rated 118,115,114,114,110,109,106,105?
I’d happily own a few of them.
October 21, 2024 at 12:21 #1710520When I read the word plodders, I thought he was talking about the Arc.
October 21, 2024 at 12:50 #1710521I think the fabled Stuart Simpson would have called them ‘high class plodders’. (if you know, you know)
October 21, 2024 at 15:38 #1710523Every flat stayer is a ‘plodder;’ only there beacuse they aren’t fast enough for 10-12 furlongs.
October 21, 2024 at 19:05 #1710531…By that way of thinking a sprinter is only there because it is not slow enough.to stay 8f.
ie The Mile is a more prestigious distance than 6f, just as 10 – 12f is more prestigious than 2m.
Stamina and speed are BOTH attributes in the racehorse.
Every horse has a mixture of speed and stamina. So the stayer has much more of the stamina attribute than speed. So What! It does not necessarily make him any worse than those racing at shorter distances. Exactly the same as a sprinter, miler or middle distance horse – it is the level of form that counts, not the distance raced.
Value Is EverythingMay 27, 2025 at 11:39 #1731346The best stayer of his generation has been retired.
May 27, 2025 at 12:46 #1731350May 27, 2025 at 13:31 #1731353Am a great fan of Kyprios.
imo One of the best stayers of recent years, alongside Stradivarius and Order Of St George. It’s a shame he could have proven better still, but for Coolmore not taking him on with their other potential top stayers though.
Am sure he’ll make a top National Hunt stallion.
Value Is EverythingMay 27, 2025 at 20:38 #1731368His back story is very similar to yeats. Both became stayers due to injury, and both had class and stamina. After he came back from a bad injury, he’s been amazing. Up there with the best ever. Incredibly tough and consistent his cadran win was just a wow performance like harbingers king george. Happy retirement. Looking forward to seeing his progeny. Could well be a dual purpose stallion.
May 27, 2025 at 23:06 #1731376I don’t think that’s true Mickey.
Yeats was ante-post favourite for The Derby for a long time and won the Coronation Cup as a 4 year old.
Kyprios looked a stayer from a very early stage. this is his race by race early record:
Won a maiden on debut at 8 1/2 furlongs on heavy ground (test of stamina for two year olds).
Then was 2/1 favourite for the longest British 2 year old Group race the Zetland (the British Group race for stayers).Won a 10f minor event on reappearance in April as a 3 year old. First of the 6 runners to be pushed along and also first under the whip. Only getting on top in the final furlong as the strong pace brought stamina into play.
Did run in a Derby Trial. The “Stayer”‘s Derby Trial at Lingfield. ie A race over almost the full mile and a half in early May of a three year old’s career is a fairly big test of stamina… Under pressure some way out and beaten 10 lengths.
Then before June was over, sent for The three year old race for out and out stayers – the Queens Vase. Not sure what price he was but Ryan Moore was on the stable companion favourite Wordsworth. Kyprios was very unruly in the stalls and withdrawn… And was not seen for the rest of the year.
His return brought considerable improvement as his stardom began as a four year old.Kyprios ground them into submission, outstaying plenty of his rivals – a magnificent asset to have.
Never anything else but a stayer, but that is no detriment.
A good horse is a good horse whatever the race distance.
It’s the level of ability shown that matters.
Kyprios was one of the best stayers and so will not be a dual purpose stallion.Value Is EverythingMay 28, 2025 at 00:43 #1731380Fantastic horse , the miles in those legs racing and training will be huge .
Interesting Moore chose Wordsworth over him all those years ago in Queens Vase .Wonder if hes still in training witb Pipe ,been off a while now .May 28, 2025 at 22:23 #1731422Just like Yeats he will end up being a top NH Sire – just a shame that with his retirement it means that the last 3 winners of the Ascot Gold Cup won’t be running.
May 30, 2025 at 09:46 #1731515I’ll eat my tennis socks if nobody’s quick off the mark in registering one of his first colts under the name of Nick Kyprios.
