Still kicking myself for not betting Hewick at Sandown and Galway, as he’s a horse I’d been tracking, and he makes plenty of appeal here as market leader. Trainer reckons he’s a potential Gold Cup horse, and if he win this off 163, he certainly would be. I think he can, and the 13-2 is tempting, but his weekend entry is enough to put me off.
Exelator Express had a good time of it last summer, and though he didn’t quite hit those heights when he returned this spring, it’s interesting that’s he’s targetted for this, as trainer not shy of an entry in this, and went close before. Didn’t get a chance to see where’s he’s at when he travelled over for The Galway Plate, getting brought down early, and I’ve got my eye on him at 33’s.
Loads of old favourites in here, and I can easily make a case for the likes of Early Doors, Darasso, Cape Gentleman, Batcio, Freewheelin Dylan, and The Jam Man. All more than capable, and in most cases, very appealing at the odds.
Gin On Lime represents powerful connections, who’ve landed this before. Another who got hampered by a faller in The Galway Plate, and at 16’s, I think she’s a shade overpriced heading into this. Very interesting.
Ronald Pump never really got a blow in at Galway, but this looks ideal for him, while Waitnsee and Dromore Lad are crazy looking prices, but face an obvious fight to get in.
There’s others worthy of a mention too, but I’ve landed on Midnight Run. He’s definitely a risky Antepost proposition, but at 18’s, I’m having an early punt, only because I think the price is wrong, and it’s a race I like an Antepost in.
He’s never quite hit the heights I expected, and although a shade disappointing last time at Galway, I thought his win at Ballinrobe shows he’s got the potential to finally deliver in a big one, and been keen to see him ina handicap like this. Fair opening mark in my opinion, and I took the 18’s. I’d be surprised to beat that, but I’ll definitely top up on the day. Not quite convinced he’ll run, but happy to risk him at these odds
Midnight Run 18’s
September 14, 2022 at 18:03 #1614698Don’t know if he will get in the race, or how far out the weights he’d be if he got a run, but 5yo Herman’s Clermont strikes me as a horse it’s hard for the Handicapper to put a mark on and he could be the dark horse in the race.
33/1.

One day he will put it all together
He will get in off a nice weight if declared and will be very tempted to side with him
September 15, 2022 at 12:05 #1614761Main two would be Rock Road + Busselton.
RR is very progressive but at 7/1 i’d just question him slightly being a 10yo.
To be honest, the whole market isn’t ripe for antepost IMO. Busselton will be the one i’m most interested in though.
Won over 2m6 at Listowel already and been described as a stayer and “not very quick” in the past so 3miles should be suitable for him.
Any ground will suit and 142 is fine.
Just need to see if 7/1 is the max anyone goes.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!September 17, 2022 at 12:09 #1614984I think Hewick is the real deal and I’m also kicking myself for not backing him in the Plate. I’m sure he’s good enough to go close here.
At the complete opposite end of the handicap is Young Dev. Needs luck to get in, but he’s consistent enough and I’d be very interested if he does squeeze in.
September 17, 2022 at 12:26 #1614989Fire Attack at 12-1 is my confident early bet here, with a view to betting Hermann Clermont if declared
September 18, 2022 at 15:35 #1615092I’m torn between Jeremys Flame, Fire Attack, and Hewick.
Nice line up in store here, and I’ll bet two of the above.
September 19, 2022 at 12:15 #1615164I’ll throw a dart at Fire Attack 12-1 ew 5 places.
September 19, 2022 at 12:29 #1615165Hewick did me a massive good turn in the old Whitbread, I didn’t even look at, never mind have a bet in, the Galway Chase and I see he won that too off 6lb higher.
He now races off 8lb higher still.
He’s a talented, clearly progressive, 7yo, but it’s a big ask in what looks another competitive contest to me.
If you think he is Cheltenham Gold Cup material, you’ll be going in strong at 7/1, but it might be that off 163 the Handicapper has finally taken his measure.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"September 19, 2022 at 16:01 #1615180I’m right with Silver Spoon and Mike, I think Fire Attack has an
excellent chance after his fine win at Leopardstown. He was
travelling very nicely up front with 3 to go, still full of
running, when he knucked on landing at came down. If he is
allowed to dictate, that’s a big if, this looks like a big
shout off 144, the same he was carrying last time out when
he came down looking like he was certainly going to be in
the mix.Fire Attack e/w 12/1 Skybet 6 places
September 20, 2022 at 11:26 #1615215With Midnight Run not going, just the one to be added here, though I think that Embittered is far too big a price, and not completely ruled him out.
I’ll be more comfortable missing Hewick at 7’s than 16’s, so I’ll sit him out just now.
I’ll give Freewheelin Dylan another go. This should be his last run before getting tucked away for the winter, and I think a return to previous winning tactics would serve him well round here. Down to a very nice mark now, and no surprise to see him bounce back to form. No concerns with ground, and I think that 33’s is too big. I’ll definitely top
if I see bigger.Freewheelin Dylan 33’s EW 6pls
September 20, 2022 at 12:00 #1615218I’ll have another look at some bigger prices with The Jam Man and Jeremys Flame. The former has conditions to suit and has been competitive off a similar mark over hurldes and the latter’s connections are putting out decent numbers. I’ll have a little each way fun with them and I’ll go win only on Hewick.
September 20, 2022 at 22:17 #1615268So, after the summer break it is time for my first bet of the seeason. I like Busselton here. Really fancied him for the Plate at Cheltehan, but due to very small field for the Turners Novice Chase, he ran there. After that a very decent second place at the Puchestown Festival in a big handicap. He was beaten by Barra there, who is the favourite here. There is a stone difference between Barra and Busselton compared to that race at Punchestown.
Busselton his late race was at Galway, where he also ran a very decent race finishing second. Only a 5 year old so there is room for improvement. Course shouldn’t be an issue as he won his beginners chase here comfortably exactly a year ago.
Busselton 8/1
September 21, 2022 at 13:31 #1615335Plumped for Gabbys Cross, after my original selection Discordantly was declared a NR.
Best of luck to all
September 21, 2022 at 13:37 #1615336I’ll go for Cape Gentleman who has a bit of class and scope to improve I think.
16-1 ew 5 places with b365 is decent.September 21, 2022 at 15:40 #1615352GABBY’S CROSS at this trip could come into her own.
