June 12, 2002 at 17:53 #99503Today I’ve heard a spokesman from the Jockey Club, Jamie Osborne and Cornelius Lysaght all basically saying that punters know what is going on and take that into account when making a bet.  This confirms what I’ve always thought about the racing industry; that it is a small incestuous world where everyone knows what goes on but it suits no one to rock the boat.  Lysaght was particularly arrogant and seems to think that every betting shop punter studies the formbook in depth before placing a bet and if he doesn’t more fool him.  What ****
ing world does this ponce live in?  I’d like to introduce him to a few of the punters at my local, I think they may be able to change his mind.  Any corruption within racing will only be exposed by outsiders; those on the inside have too much to lose.June 12, 2002 at 18:57 #99504Whilst i totally agree that what goes on is wrong, what can be done to stop it? The fact is where money is involved there will ALWAYS be those who cheat, ‘bend the rules’, deceive etc. At the end of the day how could you possibly stop a trainer who knows his as yet unraced horse has no chance of winning, laying him on Betfair? It’s impossible to prevent. What i would say however is that lining up gambles by lowering the handicap mark etc. is’nt half as easy as it was made to seem last night. There’s so many things that can go wrong….falling….blocked in ….knocked….injured…etc.
The thing that bothers me most now P2P betting sites exist is that trainers or ppl in the know can easily make thousands of pounds. Firstly they could lay it ante-post and then not run it. Imagine Gerard Butler was to openly state that the plan for Nayyir was the hunt cup. He’d undoubtably be fancied by loads of punters. Gerard could then go on Betfair and lay 7/2 for a lot of money. The day before the race he then says he will not be running because of the ground or something. Easy!
There’s so many loop holes that can be exposed in racing and there’s no way to stop it going on. What I say is become a trainer
Seriously though i believe the trainers in question should be made an example of. A fine and a six month withdrawral of their racing license would do the trick. At least it would make other trainers think twice about be so open to attract new owners etc.
