I was out all day and missed coverage from Kelso. Was this another case of wimp jockeys playing the health and safety card?
October 7, 2007 at 19:56 #118389I believe a couple of horses had slipped up on a surface made greasy by 10mm of rain on top of fastish ground.
That’s what the man on the telly said anyway.
October 8, 2007 at 06:00 #118416Barry Keniry, who was second in both races, said: “I nearly fell twice on John Dillon in the first, and slipped on the bend on Ad Murum in the second.â€
October 8, 2007 at 09:12 #118437Most remiss and lazy of the stewards not to inspect and rely on the word of trainers and jockeys.
Perhaps the fact that the first race was a Juvenile Hurdle contested mainly by debutants and the second a 0-89 Novice Handicap Chase was the reason the jumping sent the willies up the jocks rather than down to slippery ground.
First meeting of the year so presumably a clean, dense sward of grass and treated, uncompacted soil so ground problems are the last thing you’d expect.
As the overnight forecast was GF/G and by race time (and times) was G suggests the rain had got in rather than pooled on the surface.
To avoid the ‘terribly dangerous’ scenario of a shower on fast ground perhaps the NH season should be restricted to December to March…hang on though what about the ‘terribly dangerous’ scenario of a low sun.
Perhaps TRFs Scottish ‘man on the spot’ Rob North was there and will report back.
October 8, 2007 at 09:41 #118444Does the fact that two races were run mean that the race-goers at Kelso won’t get a refund?

I suggest you watch the second race and watch out for the first in the straight first time round. The came down, and clearly a number horses slid and lost their footing on landing. The fence was missed out on the final circuit. I think there were also some problems on the bends.

October 8, 2007 at 11:19 #118467I have managed to watch a reply of the two races and this time I think the correct decision was probably not made. After the previous low sun excuses from the modern day wimp jockeys, this is another example of the health and safety gone mad society.
Poor show from Kelso executive not giving out passes for a future meeting. Very bad PR on a day that normally attracts a lot of families.
October 8, 2007 at 13:35 #118499Paid £40 entry money and £4 for two racecards for half an hours "entertainement" at Kelso yesterday. Enquired about a refund and was shown the racecard by a member of staff there, which states that no refunds will be given after the first race is run.
Don’t know how you could know this when you have to have paid in first before buying a racecard.
She also told us that it was out of the courses hands as it was jockeys and trainers who complained.
Thought this was disgraceful treatment and a goodwill gesture may have been to have refunded half the entry fee.
Will think twice before going down again as it is one the the most expensive small tracks to get into and then to be treated in this manner.
Doesn’t do much to encourage racegoers, does it?
October 8, 2007 at 15:41 #118524am so sorry that this has happened at Kelso, probably my favourite track in the whole country. I find it much better value than my local course, Uttoxeter with much better racing, attracting a lot of the top northern horses. I do hope that they make amends to the people that were there, probaly best to keep your tickets just in case..was at Uttoxeter one year when the wind was so bad they had to cancel, but they didn’t come to a decision for ages – we reckon they just wanted people to spend lots of money in the bars and restaurants before they abandoned; there was no way the racing was going to go ahead.
October 11, 2007 at 08:58 #118950The Kelso racecourse website states that the course will now offer a 50% discount to another meeting this autumn to ticket holders from last Sunday’s meeting.
