Miss Woodford, while not competing in the 3 Day Event I believe a certain Trish Galvin won a bronze medal for the US in the dressage at the Rome Olympics,if my memory serves me right.I feel sure many women must have competed in Dressage for the US over the years but was this the first medal for a US woman? While not a DuPont I am told that her father’s wealth knew no bounds.
The US has a grand total of one individual Olympic medal (a bronze in 1912) in dressage. The 1976 team of Hilda Gurney, Dorothy Morkis and Edith Master were the first women to medal in the team competition.
Trish Galvin finished 6th in the Rome Olympics.
December 14, 2012 at 18:40 #422898Nicholls is today saying he doesn’t want any "mud-slinging". It’s a bit late for that.
He started the unpleasantness, for goodness’ sake, by over-reacting in the first place and taking such a high-handed attitude.
By insisting on Kauto going immediately, he helped cause the supposed distress to his staff and stopped some of them saying a proper goodbye.
Clive Smith would have been quite happy for the horse to have stayed there a bit longer but Nicholls precipitated the whole unnecessary debacle.
More fool him. Now he has lost Smith’s patronage altogether.

Not the first high profile owner fall out, Krysztofiak, Marshall, Findlay and Seasons Hollidays come to mind.
December 14, 2012 at 21:39 #422933I’ll be shot down in flames here – but Nicholls handling of Denman during his peak was outrageous. The best stayer of living memory had his career manipulated to avoid the apple of Nicholls eye.
December 15, 2012 at 04:22 #422976Thanks Miss Woodford. How memory seems to gild the Lillie! With little interest in 3day events I attended the Woffard Cup,I believe it was called, at Pebble Beach in the early sixties. We stayed at the Del Monte Lodge for three nights.Had a wonderful time.Worst food poisoning I ever experienced in my life.
December 16, 2012 at 16:13 #423198I’m sure that Smith is embarrassed by some of the letters in today’s RP, especially one from another owner in the yard saying that Smith was ejected from Nicholls’s open day in Sept after a verbal altercation with the trainer.
Putting this dispute aside, the yard seems to have its fair share of self made, powerful and arrogant owners. In the past we’ve seen disloyalty and undermining of stable jockeys. They same made for each other!
December 17, 2012 at 17:38 #423305I too read the letters page, it looks very like the industry has closed its ranks and is supporting Mr Nicholls. There is only one Champion trainer to keep on the right side of, but plenty of owners that can be shown the door. The negative posts on Mr Nicholls facebook page have been removed and remains what looks like ‘closed for business’ – which rather says it all.
December 17, 2012 at 21:25 #423332According to some sources elsewhere, we are going to hear a lot more about this later this which apparently will not be flattering to Smith

I’d be very surprised at that.Nicholls is the one who has made an arse of himself. We shall wait and see.
