Looks like being the Ascot Chase over 2m 5.5f on Saturday.
At the moment 15 horses entered of which only one is a total no-hoper (Mystical Star).
Obviously most of the others won’t run but I hope that enough take their chance to make it a reasonable test for The Champ.
Monet’s Garden is entered and if he runs over a more suitable trip to him than the KG was then he may push KS a bit. It’s on BBC 2 so were likely to get a couple of hours of pure hype and Rishi creaming his kecks.
The spread on the phrase "best chaser of all-time" stands at 2.9-3.2.February 11, 2008 at 16:59 #142306Given the massive weight pull, I’d be stunned if Monet’s got anywhere near Kauto this time, though to be honest, he(Monet’s) was out on his feet at Aintree and should be fitter this time. I also wouldn’t worry about the proximity to Cheltenham as Kauto ran in the Tingle Creek and then won the King George and they are similary spread.
February 11, 2008 at 19:47 #142364fair along could be an each way bet if the field is big enough. Goes well fresh and could improve for step up in trip
February 11, 2008 at 22:09 #142396I don’t think Fair Along has the ability to mix it with the big guns over fences
February 11, 2008 at 22:31 #142404Weather forecast suggests that they might have a job on providing safe ground.
February 11, 2008 at 23:01 #142417I’m thinking of going on Saturday, but only if kauto Star runs
Anytime I have watched national Hunt racing at Ascot on tv it has looked quite dean with the crowd very far removed from the racing..Anyone been there this season?
Is it worth the trip? Kauto Star apart
February 11, 2008 at 23:20 #142424Maybe they don’t get decent NH crowds anyway but it probably looks soulless because it’s so bloody big. I was there when George Washington won the QEII and despite a biggish crowd there was still all the room in the world.
I’m also only making the trip if Kauto runs as well so I hope there’s no doubts on Sat morning if the ground is iffy.
February 12, 2008 at 08:09 #142473The size of Ascot does not help and you are some way from the action.
If you accept that as a given then I suggest forking out for Premier admission and getting a seat on the fourth floor of the grandstand.
Provided you have a pair of bins you get a great unobstructed view of the racing, although I accept watching from such a vantage point isn’t everyones cup of tea.
February 12, 2008 at 08:19 #142475Kauto Star has also been entered in the 3.10 at Wincanton on Saturday – a Limited Handicap over 26f
February 12, 2008 at 08:50 #142482Not really bothered what turns up or where he runs just want him to get this one under his belt and get home safe and sound.
These are the worst races for the connections, the one before the big one. Denman’s owner was hyper after the race on Saturday probably relieved it was all over.
Kauto’s owners heads will be spinning this weekend with a whole lot of what if”s. No doubt he’ll be fine as he’s in very good hands but still a worrying time for all concerned.

For all that he’d smash everything out of the handicap if appearing, I’d not be at all surprised if he took in that race in lieu of Ascot – it would comprise less of a schlepp across the country, plus Nicholls will have a better idea of what to expect / trust of the ground at his "local" than at the current hotchpotch in Berkshire.

February 12, 2008 at 09:26 #142492Agreed.
If you are ever going to get a shock result on funny ground, it is going to be at Ascot. If I owned Kauto Star, it is the last track I would give him his Gold Cup prep at…..
February 12, 2008 at 09:47 #142496Unless the clerk at Ascot really turns the taps on, or the weather forecast is wrong then I reckon GF ground in the straight is slight odds-on.
Quite agree with GC and TDK. Hopefully Smith and Nicholls do too, though admittedly a rematch with Monet’s Garden off levels would be good sport.
February 12, 2008 at 09:54 #142498I think it is quite funny that the clerk of the course says "We will never water the course for one horses benefit" but they are watering to make it safe, just as long as Kauto gets home in front I will be happy.
Do you think he will be a backable price on the day (Bigger that 1-3) lol
I also think that Kauto running is the difference of around 2,500 attending as everyone wants to see a superstar in action!
February 12, 2008 at 16:10 #142572Agreed.

I agree totally. Since its been modified Ascot is a right funny track I wouldn’t send any horse there unless it couldn’t win anywhere else then you might as well give it a try.
As for watering ground – NOOOOOOOO!! I hate it. Leave nature to determine the ground.
February 12, 2008 at 22:36 #142650Moved to the "definitive" thread on the duel!
February 14, 2008 at 11:36 #1430729 declared including Kauto, Monets & Demon.
