Denman starting to drift. Any problems ?
March 2, 2008 at 19:42 #147909yup one big one…..they have taken so much money on Kauto Star they need Denman…..if you think he is drifting now wait until the day especially if the ground is good……all the publics money will be on Kauto IMO
March 2, 2008 at 19:54 #147914Marb – agree with what you say re Denman and the ground but the fact is that it is likely KS’s running would be affected by the going and, therefore, Denman’s chance will logically be affected too.
March 3, 2008 at 12:52 #148042Interesting to read that Willie Robinson thinks that Denman reminds him so much of Mill House and believes that he will beat Kauto Star in the Gold Cup.
Adrian Maguire is confident that Denman will win – likewise Mike Dillon of Ladbrokes – whereas Jamie Spencer thinks Kauto Star will be too classy for the big horse.
It really has caught the public’s imagination. Even friends of mine, who have no real interest in the sport, have asked me which of the two will win.

Hope you told them Kauto Star

Naturally I did. The more sheep who follow the Kauto trail, the bigger price Denman will become.

How likely is it that Kauto is really about to come up against the best since Desert orchid? Because that is what Denman will need to be
There arent many horses that I have enjoyed watching more than Denman but even fewer performances I have seen (im beginning to wonder if any) as impressive as Kauto at Kempton
(as i posted elsewhere)

I THINK THAT PEOPLE WHO THINK DENMAN WILL WIN BY SIMPLY MAKING IT A FASTER RACE THAN LAST YEAR AND EXPOSING KAUTO STARS STAMINA. I SUPPOSE IF YOU LOOK AT LAST YEARS RACE (WHICH WASNT FAST i BELIEVE??) YOU EITHER SEE KAUTO IDLING UP THE STRAIGHT A BIT OR SIMPLY PLUGGING ON FROM EXOTIC DANCER AND TURPIN GREEN.
SOME PEOPLE SIMPLY BELIEVE THAT ALL DENMAN HAS TO BE IS ANOTHER MASTER OATS TO ACTUALLY WIN THIS.

March 3, 2008 at 21:13 #148209Just hope The Listener’s connections realise the Gold Cup is cutting up badly and is being set up for their fella. He will be able to run the race at his pace (not the crawl like last year) and use the Roselier staying power. It’s a joke that his regular jock thinks he won’t stay. Roselier’s have one of the best records of any sires in the "Nationals".
March 4, 2008 at 09:20 #148304The listener would need 2 buses and a taxi to get the gold cup trip. Denman took him of his feet over 3 miles on the Lexus to such a tune he couldn’t even hold on to second place. If he didn’t get the trip in a slow run race imagine what’s going to happen if he runs in this one………..IMO he would be gone 4 out and lucky to finish never mind win.

Hi Ken,
The Listner is a very good horse in is own right but in this race he will be no where near his own right he will be totaly out of his depth IMO Mossbank who has improved this year beat him into 3rd in the Lexus, even look at last year’s Henessy in Ireland where he ran the race his way and emptied out he’s not even (well more than likley) not going to get his ground just look back to last years gold cup and see where he finished (11th) and this year we know will be even faster…cant see him finish in top 10

We won’t have 10 runners in the Gold Cup at this rate. A small field would have made it a tactical race and played to The Listener’s strength.
He has romped home over 3 miles on more than one occasion so it’s rubbish this horse won’t stay 3 miles +.
The problem with Roselier’s is that plenty of them prefer flat left handed tracks, Suny Bay, Royal Athlete, Moorcroft Boy, Ossmoses, Kingsmark, d’Argent, Baronet, Royal Emperor, etc, etc. Notice a theme all these horses stayed extreme trips.
Anyway connections have now confirmed the wrong option has been taken. The Ryanair will be as tough as the Gold Cup if you exclude the big two.
March 7, 2008 at 17:31 #148944Just a thought…
Is it possible Denman could start favourite for the Blue Riband?
If punters are getting hammered at The Festival, then Kauto Star is sure to be popular. Punters will use him as their ‘get out of jail card’.
But what if they’re doing well? What will the bookies do to get themselves out of trouble? Lay Kauto Star, perhaps?
What do you think?
March 9, 2008 at 08:14 #149188Having followed racing for over 30 years, the impacts of career, family and enthusiasm for other sports have led to a decline in my level of interest in recent times – although the exploits of Ouija Board did make me dewy-eyed on more than one occasion. However, the arrival of this week has brought a long-gone level of anticipation, the usual cynicism flying out of the window. Goose bumps, butterflies – what must it be like for those involved directly with the horses?
Other than the fact that he can be beaten, has this season told us anything new about Kauto Star? Granted, the nerve-shattering jumping errors seem to have gone but in terms of the horses he’s competed against, hasn’t it been a case of same-old, same-old?
Is Denman big enough to knock the King off his castle, though? Physically, he certainly is but does his form to-date come up to scratch? A visually impressive defeat of a sub-standard Hennesey field, a workmanlike victory in the Lexus and a gentle prep-race for the big day provide evidence that is far from conclusive.
At the moment, I’m inclined to the view that Denman may be a freak, the likes of which we’ve not seen for a long time and that he’ll bully his way to glory in the Gold Cup. My six penn’orth of hope, though, lies in seeing both major protagonists jumping the last together and then, if some hitherto unconsidered beast denies both the chance of success, who cares? We’ll all have been treated to something just that bit special.
March 10, 2008 at 12:04 #149431A newcomer to the Forum here, so hello everyone – been following racing since the 1960’s and especially enamoured with National Hunt racing, though I don’t get as much time to study it nowadays with ever-increased committments.
May as well be controversial here and throw in my two pennyworth – personally, I think the whole Kauto Star v Denman thing is the most ridiculously overhyped nonsense I have seen in a long time. Granted Kauto Star has proved himself a decent horse, but it is hardly a vintage crop of steeplechasers at the moment, and what exactly has Denman beaten ? The media in general seem to be so desperate to have a real champion that they are treating the whole thing like some kind of prize-fight, presumably because there is such a dearth in the steeplechasing department at the moment.
Perhaps one’s memories become rosier with the passage of time, but I don’t rate the current crop of chasers at all, especially when I think back to what I believe to have been something of a golden age with the sport – the late 1960’s – early 1970’s – with the likes of Pendil, The Dikler, L’Escargot (surely one of the most under-rated horses of all), Titus Oates, Spanish Steps, Red Rum, Crisp, Bula ,Killiney etc etc – following on from Arkle, Mill House, Flyingbolt and others. Let’s not forget that L’Escargot not only won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice, but also the Grand National (beating Red Rum by 15 lengths) and was also placed twice in the National and had the speed to win the Gloucesterhire Hurdle at the festival.Though Kauto Star has done well by today’s standards, I rate him lower than Desert Orchid and certainly lower than horses like L’Escargot.
Maybe he will win and Denman finish second – who knows ? – but it is just a horserace and no more exciting in my opinion than watching the stars of the 1970’s – possibly less so because there were far more of them back then.
Expecting flames, bullets etc – so armourplating on and bullet-proof jacket in place.Thick-skinned as well which helps !!!
Enjoy the Festival everyone.
March 10, 2008 at 12:18 #149435A very big welcome to TRF, Seventy Four.

March 10, 2008 at 12:21 #149438Many thanks Seabird.
I had been trying to join for a while but there was some problem with the registration process, which happily appears to have been solved now.
