Irish apprentice Julie Burke took out her frustration at letting the winning horse up her inside in the apprentice race at Dundalk today by hitting her horse Faynita on the neck with her whip when pulling up.
The poor horse didn’t deserve that after giving his all as he usually does and I sincerely hope the jockey is in for a lengthy ban after this disgraceful effort.
Unfortunately all the connections of the horse look be related to the jockey.
If anyone’s in any doubt watch a replay of the 2.35 at Dundalk on the ATR website.May 8, 2010 at 22:06 #294805Could be well referred to the Turf Club.
Stewarding in Ireland again goes on a walk. Unbelievable

Surely its against rules to hit your horse after the line unless in an effort to control it?????
May 8, 2010 at 22:31 #294813Take a look at High Awards last race and comment on Johnny Murtagh Whip action in the last 100 yards.
I was shocked with what i saw tbh…but then again the Horse was a mess all over the track and Cork is tricky track for babys
May 8, 2010 at 23:24 #294817Pat Smullen’s mount Anaverna jinked towards the gateway to the parade ring at Wexford yesterday after winning the fillies maiden, drawing a shout of "ah ya **** ya" and a correctional slap down the shoulder from Smullen

Didn’t see today’s incident but if what you say is true then that’s totally wrong from the jockey, never nice to see that.
May 9, 2010 at 18:13 #294998When something like this is seen and the stewards appear to have missed it is there any route for a member of the public to raise a complaint? When video evidence is available it should be a simple matter to investigate the issue.
May 9, 2010 at 18:57 #295006dont know how the stewards missed this it really is unacceptable
May 9, 2010 at 19:23 #295008It looked like a petulant act by Burke after she’s just been beaten and was very unsightly indeed. Racing has a hard enough job defending itself against the animal rights brigade without this sort of thing playing into their hands.
Deserves a lengthy ban IMO.

This is an absolute disgrace, just makes you wonder what could be going on behind closed doors – I dread to think.

I saw a gates handler punch an unruly customer behind the barriers the other day. Handler was clearly frustrated that the animal refused to load. Looked as though he quickly realised he’d done the wrong thing on camera and tried to make amends by giving the victim a rub on the snout. These guys are usually very professional too.
May 23, 2010 at 00:40 #296532As the Irish stewards managed to ban Ronan Whelan today for excessive use of the whip, despite him having dropped it coming out of the stalls, I think it’s pretty safe to say that the standards over here aren’t very high. Watch most Irish bumpers, then compare the number of very obvious non-triers with the number that are actually done. It doesn’t inspire confidence.
People are complaining about the French stewards following their rules to the letter, yet at least they manage to do that. We could do with some of them over here.May 23, 2010 at 10:42 #296547

The Irish stewards have a lot to live up to in today’s 1000 Guineas: they’ll look positively prehistoric unless they can emulate their British and French brothers by getting the winner thrown out.
May 23, 2010 at 15:37 #296575Irish Stewards must be on holiday at the moment.. Poor Ronan Whelan probably got the blame again!
