I notice all four of J J O’Neill’s runners at Southwell today are non-runners.
What do we read from this ? Suggesting the ground is too firm i assume.
The most interesting by far of course would have been WICHITA LINEMAN in the first. I see he is entered for Stratford on Saturday where i am going to so i hope they will let him take his chance there instead. Though more likely will probably run at Chepstow i guess.
This leaves McCoy with one interesting ride today for Edgie on BURNSWOOD at 3.50 – had opted against Jonjo runner anyway
October 22, 2008 at 14:15 #185840The going at Southwell is reported as G, G-F in places
Wichita Lineman won a bumber on GF and another race on G, Cross Compliance ran okay on G at Southwell last time out, Ice Melted has form on G ground, Firth Of Forth to be fair has only won on Soft/Heavy.
I don’t know what reason has been given for the Nons today but if it is ground, will this or should this be questioned/penalised?
October 22, 2008 at 14:59 #185848all four are out through going
Overnight the going was good, so presumably it is drying out.
October 22, 2008 at 15:20 #185851Or he has some other reason for not going – should this be allowed/questioned/penalised ?
This is one of the benefits of AW racing and a big negative for turf and NH meets where racecards get decimated through either genuine going or spurious withdrawals leaving small and un-competitive or low quality races that really should have their prize money cut accordingly, imo
I don’t believe all 4 of these can be genuine NRs for ground today
October 22, 2008 at 16:05 #185856I’m not going to bite Simon

I thought you would be happy today anyway with two sand pit meetings to concentrate on – I’m surprised a low grade NH meeting has attracted so much attention from your good self.
October 22, 2008 at 16:25 #185857Normally I wouldn’t give it more than a cursory glance Paul, but after Jonjo’s public work ride display with Straw Bear yesterday and his shooting apart of what were already iffy races today by spurious withdrawals, I really do think it’s about time the prize money is better allocated to the more popular and competitive AW cards
The latest email announcement from GL states that so well supported are their cards they will now have 8 race cards starting earlier to accomodate the demand
If Jonjo persists in his games that NH racing seemingly supports, perhaps he should ask JP to fund them and let the prize money undeservedly allocated to those cards go to the AW owners and trainers who do want to play.
Anyway, back to the sandpits…
October 22, 2008 at 16:58 #185863Isn’t Straw Bear with Nick Gifford?
October 22, 2008 at 17:18 #185865Yes.
Colin
October 22, 2008 at 17:19 #185866Yes, but that don’t make the withdrawals or running right does it? Still, let’s not talk about that.
October 22, 2008 at 17:39 #185867Not wanting to complicate matters…….diverting some attention away from Jonjo…….i notice now that Sue Smith as also withdrawn all 3 of her Southwell runners this afternoon. Race 3 down to 8 runners now…
October 22, 2008 at 17:54 #185872Yes, but that don’t make the withdrawals or running right does it? Still, let’s not talk about that.
What the hell is that meant to mean? You were wrong trying to link up Jonjo and Straw Bear…admit it.
October 22, 2008 at 17:58 #185873If a trainer deems the ground unsuitable then he should have every right to withdraw his horse(s).

An interesting slant from the Great Leighs publicity machine Simon – my understanding is both GL and Kempton are coming under pressure to stage eight race cards at the midweek evening meetings by the bookmakers, who want a 5:50 start with the approaching earlier finishes to the afternoon racing.
October 22, 2008 at 18:00 #185875Take it easy, Aidan.
Simon also thinks that AW is more "popular" and "competitive" than National Hunt racing, and is obviously therefore prone to the occassional bout of mental Tourette’s.
October 22, 2008 at 18:18 #185879That’s right GH, after a good competitive handicap at GL we now have a race with 4 runners(?) boasting 2 wins from 45 attempts with a 2/5 fav – this should be good and competitive

Not necessarily imo. In this case it seems fair enough, but I don’t think that trainers should be allowed to site unsuitable ground as the reason for withdrawal if the going is the same at the time of withdrawal as it was at declaration time. If they do, they should be fined.

Sorry, I hadn’t realised you had gone to all the trouble of getting such representative samples.
