A really interesting little handicap at Sandown tonight. Johnny G and Lady C both have unexposed types running and I prefer Hoop of Colour who did very well to win lto after huge traffic problems.

£100 win Hoop of Colour 4-1 Sandown 7.30 loser

Am on me hols but see Hartnell is a big price today. I think he would be shorter if trained by Stoute or Gosden and fancy an ew.

After the normal August hiatus things are starting to hot up again and I am really looking forward to this weekend which has to be the finest weekend of flat racing in a long time. The Legers in England and Ireland, Irish Champion, Matron Stakes, Vermeille, Moulin, Niel, Foy plus all the 2 year old races I am salivating at the thought! I am particularly excited about seeing the return of Ectot who I have at 50’s for the Arc. Make no mistake this is a serious beast of a horse – he beat the French 2,000 Guineas winner over a mile – it is just a question of whether he stays a mile and a half. If he does I expect him to be single figures for the Arc after this weekend. You can still get 25’s.

I’ll have plenty of bets for this weekend when the final decs come through but there are also a couple that interest me tomorrow.

I have always been a fan of

    Venus De Milo

and she has run really well over inadequate trips this year. They sacrificed her lto as Tapestry’s pacemaker so you can forget that run. This is far easier than other races she has been running in and this trip will suit her perfectly. 6-1 is a huge price about the highest rated horse in the race.

Another one that I think has been running over the wrong trip is

    Kiyoshi

. If you watch the video of her penultimate run she was travelling all over Euro Charlene but ran out of gas in the last furlong. LTO they ran her again over 8f on heavy ground and she will find the quicker conditions and the 7f much more in her favour tomorrow. Again 11-1 is a very big price methinks.

    £100 ew Venus De Milo – 6-1 2.40 Doncaster

    £75 ew Kiyoshi – 11-1 2.05 Doncaster

    £25ew double the above

I have been desperately trying to find an angle on the Doncaster Cup today but there doesn’t seem to be one! It looks a poor field with the exception of the front two. I expect to Estimate to win but won’t be getting involved.

I have just had the one bet. A small ew on Retirement Plan who is running into form and ran a cracker in the Ebor.

    £35ew Retirement Plan 11-1 – 2.10 Doncaster

RP ran a cracker just beaten by a better handicapped horse. With JG in such great form I have had a late tickle on Brass Ring.

So the last and oldest classic tomorrow and it surely has to be a question of whether Kingston Hill stays. Or does it? He has the class without doubt but there are a few doubts for me apart from his stamina. The ground is simply not as they would have wanted it. I know he has run ok on decent ground before but connections clearly feel that he is a much better horse on softer ground and the quicker surface is not only a disadvantage to him but an advantage to his main rivals. His trainer has ummed and ahhed all week and this does not fill punters like me with much confidence.

He stayed the mile and a half of the Derby very well but again connections clearly feel he has speed as his entries over 10f have shown. Can a Mastercraftsman really win a Leger?

If Romsdal hadn’t flopped in the King George I think he would be disputing favouritism for this. His form up to then was very progressive, he is sure to stay the trip well and he will like the ground. Add to that he has the specialist Leger trainer and jockey and he has always had this race as his number one target. BUT you do have to forgive that KG run and they didn’t really come up with excuse – not one that I read anyway. For me it was just a step too far, too early and he has been given plenty of time to get over it. If he can reproduce his Derby form he has to be involved and the 13-2 looks attractive to me.

Elsewhere there is a feast of racing this weekend and so much I am looking forward to. Ectot will be my highlight on Sunday but I am also hoping Tapestry can cope with the drop in trip tomorrow and beat Rizeena. It won’t be easy but Palace will ensure a proper pace and I am hoping that will be enough.

    £75ew Romsdal 13-2 – St Leger

Great call Joni,I said last year

    Kiyoshi

wasn’t a miler, she had everything in her favour and 12/1 like you say was massive. Those with short memories obviously forgot her runs against the likes of both

    Rizeena

    and

    Tapestry

    ,both Group 1 winners.
TAPK is sitting on silly prices for tomorrows St Leger,48’s,46’s down to 20’s on

    Snow Sky

    and 10/1 about

    Kingston hill

,both ran in last years Racing Post trophy and to me its between the 2.So long as Gosden gets beat I’ll be happy!!

Thanks Gord – good to hear from you mate. I was worrying that I was the only person left on DL & P’s!!! Good luck with your AP bets – you should really have the winner covered with those two but remember that dastardly Gosden is out to get you – specifically you!

I’m all over this Ectot tomorrow and although he is not worth backing at 11-1- he is still longer in the betting for the Arc than Gallante who is longer in the betting for the Niel! Work that one out. If Ectot stays he will develop into a very interesting contender in a race that is amok with confusion at the moment. I already have a bit at 50’s but I am hoping 25’s will look big tomorrow evening.

    £50ew Ectot – 25-1 Arc loser

    £35ew Ectot 50-1 Arc

Very interesting horse with very interesting entries!

Where did you find this little rough Diamond Joni??,plenty to like about his Arc chances now for sure.

Early in the season Ectot and Karakontie seemed to be on a good few lists of horses to follow. Karakontie disappointed after winning the French 2000 G and Ectot had a setback.

I had big doubts about Ectot on stamina grounds and how he would shape after a long time off but he answered both today, although I’d still be a wee bit cautious on the stamina front if the rains come.

50/1 is a belting price and it’s hard to believe I saw Treve at 3/1 somewhere a couple of days ago. You can get 10/1 on her now but she couldn’t beat Pomology, who is rated 20lbs lower today.

It’s open and I have hopes on Taghrooda at 14/1 and 10/1 and Kingston Hill at 20/1. Good luck Joni.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
