So it’s been a while but I have been on hols and the racing has been poor anyway. But plenty to look forward to over the coming days and two small bets today.
Ultrasonic
has to be one of the unluckiest horses in training and I expect him to make amends today.
Homeric
is a horse I have always liked and I think he is still well handicapped. I’ll double them up as well.
£100 win Ultrasonic 9-4 – 3.45 Ascot
£100 win Homeric 11-4 – 3.10 Ascot
£50 win doubleTotal £1,904.29

A dose of seconditus today but it’s all about tomorrow.I am having two bets. It’s no secret how much I like
Cape Peron
and I thought he ran a blinder at Royal Ascot considering he had to race alone and the ground was too fast for him. With a slight ease in conditions I think he will take all the beating tomorrow. I still think this is a group horse.
I also cannot see past
Cirrus Des Aigles
in the big one. This is the best horse in the world. He has almost a stone in hand on ratings. He loves Ascot. He is odds against.
I know he has to prove that he is just as good after a disappointing first run but his trainer has been bullish over the last few weeks and the opposition simply does not have anything like the form to trouble him if he IS fit.
As much as I respect Sir Michael, Hillstar has to have improved a ton since beating the fully exposed BOM. Trading Leather is respected also but the form of that Irish Derby is not up to much and the three year olds in Britain and Ireland look an average bunch this year. Novellist is a decent horse but only a decent one and will need plenty of rain to bring him into the equation. Ektihaam is a horse I really like but I can’t get over the fact that his jockey would rather ride another horse in a Group 2 than this one in one of the most important races in Europe. That HAS to be a massive negative coupled with the fact he is unlikely to have things all his own way with Universal in the race.
CDA is a proper Group 1 horse. He has proven it time and time again and I wouldn’t even be too bothered if it DIDN’T rain as he was brilliant on faster ground in Meydan and when winning the Champion a couple of years ago. I expect him to win well.
£200ew Cape Peron – 9-2 – Ascot 2.40

A disappointing run from CDA and I can only think that age has finally caught up with him as that blasted Stevie C suggested it might!
His trainer said he was still a bit rusty and perhaps one shouldn’t write him off just yet especially if the rain does eventually come but he was firmly put in his place again by a seriously impressive winner. He must surely come into the Arc reckoning with a performance like that. I thought Trading Leather ran well considering how hard he pulled and he would be of interest in the Juddmonte. Paul Hanagan clearly knew something nobody else did hey!
I am hoping we get a bit of rain now as I would love to see Cape Peron at Goodwood next week.

July 30, 2013 at 18:27 #446976Plenty of bets this week but I have just grabbed the last 12-1 on offer about
Cape Peron
in the Betfred Mile on Friday.
He looks like he will finally get his ground and I think he will take all the beating.

I’m with you on this one Joni.Cant see the ground going firm again and even if he’s drawn in the Car Park he’ll cut through the field and win.Managed to get 10/1 and that will do for me.Good Luck mate!

Agree with you both on this one, been waiting for a bit of juice in the ground since Ascot and now it’s here I’m spent up
Good luck to you both though gents, I’m sure you won’t need it
July 30, 2013 at 21:59 #447008Thanks guys – good luck to you both too. Like you say Boz I don’t think we’ll need it. He is a class horse.
I have one bet tomorrow at Sandown where I expect Frankel’s half brother Morpheus to hose up running off 85. He is only 7-4 but I think it looks a weak race and he is destined for far better things.
As for the big one, I am scratching my head. There is clearly little between the top two and perhaps Toronado was slightly unlucky last time. However he had the chance to put the race to bed and DA wouldn’t let him. Let’s not forget also that the race came shortly after that terrible Derby experience AND he didn’t settle. Add to that the softer ground which should play to DA’s strength and stamina and I am struggling to see Toronado reverse the form. However I am a big fan of DOW and a line through Mars (albeit a tenuous one as it was over two different trips) puts him pretty much on a par with the top two. His trainer thinks he is a better horse on faster ground but he still has good form on soft ground and I think he might give them both something to think about.
So all in all I think DA will beat DOW with Toronado third but I am not confident enough to part with any of my hard earned on it!
£100 win Morpheus – 7-4 – Sandown 7.30

July 31, 2013 at 12:44 #4470562 more small bets today. I am a fan of
Elkayeed
and am hoping Hanagan can steal it from the front. I am also going to have a little bit on
Declaration of War
as I think he is over priced.
£25 win Elkayeed 5-1 2.30 Goodwood

Some fantastic racing today and pure joy to watch a genius at work. That was Mr Hughes today. Has there ever been a better jockey at Goodwood? I thought the ride he gave Toronado was out of this world, holding on to him until the last possible moment and then delivering him late and wide so that DA hadn’t the chance to eyeball him or come back at him. Then blow me down he rides an even better race in the next! Superb. There is no doubt that the best horse won today and I would think DA will now have his work cut out to reverse the form if/when they meet again. I can’t wait to find out!
Tomorrow is all about one horse. They have been incredibly patient with
Wild Coco
. Waiting for the ground to soften before starting a season that they hope may even include the Arc. This is how highly they rate the horse and I expect her to win with her head in her chest tomorrow. I am delighted to see her odds against and will have a nice bet at 5-4.
£300 win Wild Coco – 5-4 – 3.45 Goodwood

I’ll be on Wild Coco as well. I have followed her, as we used to have a big tom cat called Coco and you can’t beat that as theory for having a bet.
I have been waiting for Radiator and today is the day. As Timeform said last night, she’s got red-hot connections and she is a warm order this morning. Once they find the key to her, I am sure plans will be fluid and she should be going on near the end of the season with perhaps a tilt at the Bleeder’s Cup Juvenile.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

She was very impressive Joni. Hopefully she’ll get the ground she needs between now and the end of the season. Interesting that TQ was full of praise for both Lady C and Mike Marshall.
The less said about TQ’s ride on Morpheus the better

That blasted Hughes!!!! Wow he’s a good jockey. No excuses although we were a bit short of room we had plenty of time to pick up the winner. I still think on a slower surface you are going to see a serious horse.

Hi BM and Steve! Yes she won really well didn’t she?! If there is juice in the ground she should go close in the Yorkshire Oaks.

August 2, 2013 at 15:05 #447358Another Cecil horse I have been looking forward to runs today. Retirement Plan stepped up hugely on his debut to win well under Ryan Moore last time out and he has been given an entry in the Leger. He was also entered in a couple of the Group races this week but connections have chosen this easier handicap. I hope he will go close off a mark of 88.
£75ew Retirement Plan – 4-1 – Goodwood 5.25

A really promising horse this and the further he went the better he looked. If he is not quite up to winning the Leger he will certainly be a serious horse next year. I have the feeling he will be even better on easier ground.
