For many of us he’ll forever be associated with Run And Skip, but he trained many other successful horses during his lengthy career.
I wish him well.

I don’t mean this in a sarcastic way, but I genuinely did think that he had retired years. Here’s to a long and happy retirement for him, as I bet many a Spearing horse
March 31, 2023 at 11:37 #1641920Sadly, he died yesterday at the age of 82. Retirement just wasn’t meant to be after being diagnosed with lung cancer back in 2021.
May he rest in peace
March 31, 2023 at 15:16 #1641932Condolences to his family and friends.
Rest in peace, Mr Spearing.
March 31, 2023 at 20:27 #1641959Very sad to hear this news so soon after his retirement.
John Spearing’s name will forever be entwined with Run And Skip’s in my memory, but he was far from a one-horse trainer.
The longevity of his career does him great credit, and suggests it was as much a passion as a job.
RIP John Spearing
March 31, 2023 at 20:37 #1641963Sorry to hear this news.
I must admit I did not realise he trained Rapid Lad, winner of 12 races at Beverley. Outside of the all weather circuits, there cannot be many horses to have won that amount of races at one track.
RIP.
