Whilst not a massive fan of soccerball, I do nevertheless appreciate that it is one of the more popular children’s games in this country.

Having seen the exploits of a certain Joey Barton yesterday – especially his highly impressive ‘may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb’ philosophy – I was wondering where he stands in relation to the new whip rules.

Excessive force is obviously a tricky one but as both his victims were a) footballists and b) Argentinians, that pretty much excludes him from any punishment. It also means that Mr Barton was using corrective measures appropriately.

Excessive frequency may be more troubling following the sheer number of his misdemeanours but in his defence the Kompany-bound headbutt hardly made any contact, so we’re looking at the minimum two days, I reckon.

The stewards can of course disregard any actions that allows his horse (or team in this case) to stay in contention, so no problems there. Ditto, with above shoulder height.

Finally, we have to look at how many offences were over the permitted amount and I definitely spotted two – which means four days off I’m afraid.

In summary we’re looking at a six-day ban for the plucky midfielder which I think sends out the right message…

    I’ll let you tell him.

If he behaved like that off the football field he would be facing assault charges yet it appears to be something football condones.

He will merely get a slap on the wrists in the form of a paltry ban, whereas in reality he should never be allowed to play the game again.

Thugs like him should not be walking the streets unsupervised yet alone being allowed to earn vast sums of money playing football.

I don’t think that "the sport of kings" has much of a right to feel smug, righteous and superior about its standing. Especially when one considers that our very own sport has accommodated the likes of those horrible, horrible toerags mentioned in the George Ward thread (Abdullah, Wentworth, Kadyrov…), Howard Johnson and of course… Joey Barton

    I wouldn’t disagree with that

I would! Joey Bartons no different to ‘hatchet’ men of the past, its part and parcel of the beautiful game,a bit of roughty toughty,Norman Hunter, Eddie Gray, Willie Young, Tom Forstyth, Billy Bremner even down to the great Zinedine Zidane they all have passion and ego! He’s hardly a slave driver!

So you consider blatant thuggery to be part of sport?

I really do wish some Chief Constable would have the balls to launch a prosecution.

And before anyone raised the "sport" of boxing – it is not a sport and it should be banned.

Betlarge – if it was a Championship game I’d be with you but given it was the highest profile game of the year the stewards are very likely to apply

    discretion

and ‘overlook’ several of the cracks. Joey clearly had a chat with D.Jacob who’d have given him the nod on that one.

But I thought he did give several of the others

    time to respond,

although none of them looked up for it really, although Balotelli might have given it a go if not handled with restraint at the back of the field.

It was a relief that City won, otherwise the thorny issue of allowing the transgressor to keep the race may have raised its head again.

I know that modern day boot studs are air-cushioned but that doesn’t go far enough IMO, I’d ban them entirely and replace with plimsolls.

Paul,I learnt to accept it many years ago,the so called ‘Beautiful Game’ originates from flair and passion of the
likes of Italy,Brazil and Argentina, all of whom fielded the dirtiest ‘footballers’ known to man,it goes with the territory just like Non-tryers are associated with Horseracing. We dont like it but there’s nothing we can do about it! I love full contact sport myself, you stick to Crochet……I mean Croquet

So now we want to prosecute and ban footballers for violence and cheating – that’d be most of them. We want to ban boxing, jumps racing, flat racing and AW racing…don’t mention the thread appreciating attractive women in racing…

Maybe some people on this sports racing forum might be better off in an opus dei monastary – though they’d probably end up starting a vote on banning god.

I think you’ll find that’s the Church Of England’s job.

A clean strong challenge is one of the most exciting things one can see on a football pitch but it must be remembered that a good tackle and an assault are two completely different things. I would think that most football fans would love to see the back of thuggery and cheating for that has nothing to do with beautiful football. Brian Clough was a

    man

who especially detested anything other than fair play and he was the greatest manager who ever lived.

Incidentally, I’m finding the analogous offerings from Mike and Dave to be quite amusing.

Gray was a victim of it all, he was never even booked once.

If it had been in France Balotelli would have been thrown out. He veered well off a straight line and was lucky not to cause more interference with Barton.

But surely he could use the Richard Hughes "why always me?" defence at that stage?
