Quiet night at my local hostelry last night.
However a question arose that I couldn’t answer.
If the jockeys stay in the same position with Hughes, Moore and Buick in the top 3 positions. When was the last time that neither of the previous seasons top 2, managed to finish in the following seasons top 3 ?
    Any ideas.

Silvestre De Sousa was 2nd last season and could well finish in the 3 this year if Johnston continues in current form

Perhaps more interesting is that the 2 jockeys having taken most rides are not in the top 3; De Sousa and Luke Morris with strike rates of 14% and 10% respectively.
Paul Hanagan has improved his strike rate to 16% and prize money earned looks favourable compared to last year thus far. His strike rate with Newmarket trainers is significantly better.

Daniel Tudhope, James Doyle and Richard Kingscote have very good strike rates and could propel themselves in contention in the next few years if suitably motivated. Jim Crowley has had a very good year and along with Tudhope would have been profitable to follow.

Of the 3 Godolphin jockeys, Barzalona has the best strike rate and smallest level stakes loss, however he also has earned least prize money. An indication that he is serving an apprenticeship of sorts. With the spotlight on Joseph O’Brien he has been able to make his mistakes without the same level of scrutiny and still rates as a jockey of enormous potential.

In respect of De Sousa, who is currently riding well it is notable that he has an inferior strike rate for Johnston than Fanning, for Al Zarooni than Barzalona or Ajtebi and for Bin Suroor than Dettori.
