Yesterday’s Derby –
No Dettori
No Murtagh
No FallonKinane retired.
Is the old guard over and done with? And how do the current lot match up?
For me O’Brien Jnr, Barzalona, Buick, Moore and Hanagan are all more than capable of matching, or even surpassing the achievements of those who have gone before.
June 3, 2012 at 12:01 #406590Hardly the next generation in the Derby line up David!
Only the winning jock being a relative newcomer with Paul Hanagan a champion having his first ride. Group 1 jock also having her first ride. The smallest field since 9 lined up in 1907 left no room for Frankie, Mikael, Johnny and company. They will most likely return next year.
How many Trainers and owners are regretting not staying in the Derby this year?June 3, 2012 at 12:38 #406601For me O’Brien Jnr, Barzalona, Buick, Moore and Hanagan are all more than capable of matching, or even surpassing the achievements of those who have gone before.
Quite a bold prediction cormack, don’t know what it’s based on but can only see Moore from the above jockeys being in the Dettori class throughout their career.
Maybe there being only 9 runners had something to do with the missing jockeys in the Derby.
June 3, 2012 at 12:49 #406603cormack didn’t watch the Oaks.
June 3, 2012 at 12:58 #406607Quite CR – I realise they both have a lot to prove and it is quite easy to look good on the likes of Camelot.
But they are both huge talents, no?
June 3, 2012 at 13:11 #406611Huge talents? Remains to be seen.
No doubt they wouldn’t be given the stallion making responsibilities unless they were good, but better than the old guard of which I’d also include Hanagan and Moore?

Maybe its just me…I detected a slight air of bitterness about Heffernan post Oaks, thought he would have been a lot happier.
I watched O’Brien and Barzelona playing dodgems out the back of a slow pace in a Classic round Epsom.

Go easy on the hype imo.
June 3, 2012 at 13:25 #406615First Derby winner for two jockeys but what a difference in the rides beween O’Brien riding Camelot and Moore riding Workforce last year.O’Brien did not cover himself with glory in the Oaks.Ryan has certainly matured since then.Hope Joe does likewise. Not sure about Buick.Long way to go to match Frankie yet.Fallon proved that he is still a master of Epsom in a later
race yesterday.Murtagh has not left the scene yet.Let’s see what Ascot brings as Frankie said.June 3, 2012 at 13:29 #406619The master of Epsom must still be Fallon – how he didn’t get a Derby ride is mystifying. Weaving the limited Kris Kin home is still the best Derby ride i’ve seen since Piggot.
June 3, 2012 at 14:22 #406642Just watched the French Derby. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Aye, certificate 18 that was. Back to earth with a bump for the young Irishman.
June 3, 2012 at 16:25 #406682Heffernan’s ride in the Oaks was the best on view in the Classics over the weekend.Joe has still a long way to go.Gets into more trouble than an average horse can get him out of.
June 3, 2012 at 20:02 #406724J O’Brien in my view rode a poor race in the Oaks. However after watching the French Derby, in hindsight the previous ride pales into insignificance. Absolutely awful. One should never send a boy to do a mans job.
Looks good on a steering job though. To return to the original point though, only Moore in my opinion can so far be classed as good as the previously mentioned jockeys. They in turn however also do not rival the classic jockeys that competed when my interest in the sport was cultivated – Piggott, Eddery, Carson, Mercer, then Cauthen too.
My memories may be rose tinted, but that was a proper crop of talent.June 3, 2012 at 20:12 #406726J O’Brien in my view rode a poor race in the Oaks. Looks good on a steering job though.Agree with the above. Must be a bit galling for the likes of Heffernan that Joseph will get the plaudits for the highest profile ride of the week on an absolute "gimme", whilst the Oaks and Jockey Club will miss the headlines.
Today was a total disaster to be fair.
June 3, 2012 at 21:05 #406740Bit harsh to judge anyone on the Jockey Club form as it was as rough a race as I’ve seen in ages and a lot of horses suffered interference.
Moore is definitely up with the best, Buick has a way to go yet I think. Hanagan is a worthy champion and good to see James Doyle getting chances at higher levels now.June 3, 2012 at 21:29 #406747Bit harsh to judge anyone on the Jockey Club form as it was as rough a race as I’ve seen in ages and a lot of horses suffered interference.

Surely a top class and experienced jockey could counter this – a few jockeys could have won on Imperial Monarch today, every professional jockey would have won on Camelot, thats my opinion.
June 4, 2012 at 07:08 #406796The rides are bearing out my rating of Joseph since he took over from Murtagh.I was accused of all kinds of bad faith when refusing to jump on the Joseph band wagon at the BC.Given the quality of horses he will get to ride this summer he is in for a tough time.If he wins no credit-if he loses!!!!!!!!!!enough said. His ride in the Oaks and French Derby were school boy stuff, not Lester stuff.Even Heffernan showed him up in the Oaks. Seamus rode a brilliant race in the Oaks which was ignored by the press.Compare with the accolades Murtagh got last year for his Oaks ride on an English horse.Must be tough knowing what kind of a jockey Joe is and then having to take a backseat to him.
