Used only a few times by Paddy Merrigan, going cheap
November 24, 2007 at 14:18 #126624I backed Special Envoy at Aintree last April and fortunately I didn’t back him today or I think I would be both 1pt and a telly down!
November 24, 2007 at 14:33 #126629How well was he travelling too.
Was coming there looking like the one to beat and then fell.
Quite unlucky, but jumping is the game.
November 24, 2007 at 14:38 #126631Poor jockeyship to ask for a jump like that at the last with him travelling so well.

I thought that too. He was travelling so well, all he had to do was pop the last and then boot him to the line. Instead, he booted him into the last.
I suspect that Mr Merrigan realised that when he launched his headgear into orbit. There is nothing worse than the thought that it could have been so different, if only …November 24, 2007 at 19:45 #126706You win some and you lose some asking for that sort of jump at the last.
It was the difference between Merrigan winning and not winning on Professor Hegarty at Hereford the other week, but clearly didn’t work quite as well today.

November 24, 2007 at 20:35 #126734what a superb display of how to bend your elbows , special envoy was cruising coming to the last and for god knows what reason merrigan decides to b****r up envoy’s momentum , why didnt he just let the horse jump and kick on once he was over safely.
lovely to see hardy eustace win .November 24, 2007 at 20:35 #126735Graysonscolumn
It was never a **** or bust moment today. The horse had already gone to the front on the bridle and only had to clamber over the obstacle to win. Merrigan knew that imo and that’s why he was so angry with himself afterwards.
November 24, 2007 at 21:25 #126750It was a little more clear-cut than it appeared on the screens at Huntingdon, then? Fair dos, conceded.

November 25, 2007 at 10:49 #126862I was as angry as Merrigan!!!! The horse went down with my cash!!!! Luckily i didn’t have a hat on at the time.
November 25, 2007 at 12:50 #126896Nothing annoys me more than when a horse goes down like that and the jockey has a paddy fit without checking on the wellbeing of the horse first – McCoy did the same with Valiramix [?]in the Champion Hurdle as well.
November 25, 2007 at 19:41 #127005It was a gut reaction from him. I wouldn’t be too harsh on him for that personally.
And all these criticisms are fine with hindsight. It was just one of those things, that’s racing etc etc.November 25, 2007 at 20:24 #127025have to say that, having from being annoyed with the jockey yesterday I was chuffed to bits when he won today….
November 25, 2007 at 20:29 #127028Seems very harsh too that the handicapper will put him up anyway, as he did for the Aintree run. The owners now have a horse who’s gone up at least a stone-and-a-half without winning a penny. Didn’t use to be the case, I’d prefer the old rules.

Thankfully McCoy has grown up a bit now. He was like a spoiled brat in those days.
It’s still possible to be hugely determined to win without chucking the toys out when fate decrees otherwise.
Maybe family life is mellowing him
