He was impressive but I think the performance has been a little inflated. There seems to be a constant need to ‘invent’ superstars and Getaway looks to be latest in a long line. He beat Tranquil Tiger who hasn’t as far as I am aware even reached listed class about six lengths. You can argue about the race not being run to suit but at the moment that is all he actually achieved. You could argue the first four may all need further so that negates the idea that the winner was at a disadvantage. If Peeping Fawn returns in the form of last year I would be surprised and disappointed if she couldn’t take care of Getaway.
May 5, 2008 at 18:30 #161774The thing is a 1m4f race almost 8 secs slow on gd-fm points to a bunch finish, and on everything he has done to date he wanted it far faster than that. Thus with everything not in his favour he has done well to win, and not only has he won, lets face it hes battered them. Not to mention that Tranquil Tiger had everything in his favour, the ground and the time etc etc making an almost identical race to his best preformance to date, where he beat munsef last year, then consider that Getaway was 6 lengths better and drawing clear and you get a grasp on the impressiveness of the performance. the racing post make it 127 and it is hard to really disagree with that, it was brilliant, and may turn out to be one of the best middle distance performances of the season, although I’ll hope to see something better and reckon new approach may do something special in that sphere.
On O’briens stable tour he said of Peeping Fawn something along the lines of she is being handled like glass and is likely to be subbing for the colts later in the season. On everything she has done so far she still needs to improve to get on top of getaway on that performance.
May 7, 2008 at 06:28 #162017„The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud could be an alternative to the Coronation Cup. There is no decision yet. A early primary target is the King George", said Paul Harley, racing manager of the Ullmann-family.
„Getaway is back in France without problems. Mr. Fabre let him run in long-distance races, to learn to enjoy the races before the really difficult tasks will come.“

Have to disagree with that… IMO Getaway needs to improve. Over 12f on good ground I really doubt he would have the pace to keep up with her. She gave Mandesha a beating over 10f at Goodwood was third in the Irish guineas and yet stays 12f in heavy ground at the Curragh.
I really hope he lets her take her chance in the Arc but that will only happen if they have no firepower. I’m surprised by his comments about the way he’s handling her – She was campaigned pretty agressively last year and took her racing well.
