If there’s a time of year where it’s particularly important to pay attention to Jockey it’s the Boxing Day meetings for me.
So when someone like Jonjo o’ Neil has a book of 6 at Sedgefield, a course where according to Timeform he’s had a total of 11 career rides prior to tomorrow, it’s worth paying attention in my opinion. Jennie Candlish provides 4 of them, Neil Mullholland 2.
Given that the owners of 3 of them would normally use Sean Quinlan who instead goes to Wetherby for a book of 6 with varying degrees of chances, is JJ’s trip north something of any significance to anyone else? Or just me? Is it simply just that there’s 80 odd races across the country and therefore not really that noteworthy?
Thoughts…
December 24, 2023 at 01:55 #1674859That is something that never concerns me, but I wish you luck.
My particular modus operandi is following trainers in form and I don’t mind who is riding for them.
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysDecember 25, 2023 at 13:33 #1674924Might be worth making a note of any jockeys that get down to their lowest possible weight for a ride eg like Harry Cobden on Madara the other week. Especially if it means they’ve had to skip Christmas dinner for it ( if jockeys ever dare to have Christmas dinner, that is!)
December 25, 2023 at 14:35 #1674926I like your observation TC. Maybe Jennie Candlish’s stable is just about to hit form at Christmas and she has something lined up for tomorrow. Her strike rate at Sedgefield is around 16% with a lot of runners sent there.
In fact, I’m quite sure that one or two stables will hit top gear tomorrow.
December 25, 2023 at 14:58 #1674928It’s worth keeping an eye on, though could be other factors at work (such as wanting to ride somewhere handy to wherever they’re spending Christmas day).
December 25, 2023 at 15:20 #1674932Unless you have a top ride over the period, I assume it is more a case of going where you will have the most rides available to you and if it is at a smaller meeting then you might have more chance of winners especially if other jockeys have gone elsewhere.
December 26, 2023 at 08:54 #1674972Sean Houlihan who is more usually connected with Phillip Hobbs or Sheila Lewis rides an Anthony Honeyball horse SARSEN at Wincanton, I don’t recall him riding for Anthony before, the stable jockeys are at Fontwell and Sam TD who gets the quality rides with Aidan Coleman injured is at Kempton, he’s a handsome horse for Elite Racing who moved from Alan King, resumee here https://www.elitesyndicates.co.uk/Home/ShareInfo/?PID=ehobfclmcuzzmseloyzffstootmuttthaoakhotf not without a chance at 14/1
