As ever with this race, a cracking line up in store.
First Lieutenant
Kauto Stone
Lord Windermere
Mount Benbulben
Prince De Beauchene
Quito De La Roque
Realt Dubh
Roi Du Mee
Sizing EuropeIf he was a decent enough price, I might be tempted to take chance on Mount Belbulben, but with so much quality in there, struggling to be very confident with just one. Like the Charlie Hall, looks a race to enjoy, rather than have a punt in, but no doubt come Saturday, I’ll have a go.
October 28, 2013 at 17:34 #456521Quite surprised to see Lord Windermere in there. Thought they might try him out in one of the better handicaps (i.e the Paddy Power or Hennessy) before stepping up proper.
Sizing Europe is always game in this race, but i’ll be opposing him this time round. You have to believe First Lieutenant is the one to beat should they op for this over the Charlie Hall.
Roi Du Mee could be a good shout at a price.
Like you say, definitely one to enjoy. Really looking forward to a cracking Saturdays racing! One of the best of the season.

I agree with you VTC, not a big betting proposition although I wish I knew Mouse Morris’s plans for First Lieutenant. If he does travel over for the Charlie hall, the 11/4 on offer from PP for Sizing Europe would feel like a steal. His win earlier this month at Gowran Park lets us know that he is fit enough now for this, and the nearest to him in the ratings (if First lieutenant heads to Wetherby) would be Mount Benbulben, who is 9lbs inferior and his fitness (last run in April) would have to be taken on trust. He (MB) looked very decent in that run at Punchestown, and if eight stand their ground, the 7-1 e/w with bet365 (although not my kind of bet) looks pretty safe.
At this time of the year, in his previous campaigns, First Lieutenant, hasn’t crossed the water, so unless Mouse decides to feed us some sprats on his website (can you believe that clicking on "news", there isn’t any!!!…..did they all die?) then I’m going to leave this alone and just enjoy knowing I don’t have any money that’s about to depart t*ts up at the 5th.
October 28, 2013 at 21:32 #456579Bar his 2nd in the Tingle Creek in 2011, Kauto Stone has run more than 30lbs better at Down Royal than elsewhere. He won this well last year and skated up in a Grade 2 there in his first outing for Nicholls.
Being fresh and being at Down Royal appear to be exactly what he needs. You couldn’t nail enough bargepoles together for me to touch him at any other track, but he holds strong appeal EW now before the place terms drop with potential withdrawals. Though it should be noted he is not yet jocked up – still I cannot see the trainer not going for the race which holds the best opportunity all year of the horse winning.
November 2, 2013 at 21:10 #457128Was very pleased with the 16/1 i got before Quito got withdrawn
November 2, 2013 at 21:32 #457130Won like he was different class, Peter. Well done, mate
November 3, 2013 at 11:26 #457182I couldn’t understand how a Grade 2 winner who finished ahead of the favourite last time out could be as big as 16/1. However i might not be too keen to back him in the other bigger races. I was watching the race with my brother and he asked why i had backed the outsider and it just seemed to make sense…
First Lieutenant – Better in the latter part of the season and needed the run (not to mention the lack of value)
Kauto Stone – Lacks consistency and although has shown his best form at this meeting, i couldn’t back him
Mount Benbulben – Lacks experience and might not be up to this class (he was running a screamer at the time and is the one i’d keep an eye on next time out)
Prince De Beauchene – Couldn’t beat Roi Du Mee in a Grade 2 back February and had no real right to be a smaller price
Sizing Europe – Run 3 times over 3 miles and never won. Just couldn’t back him on that evidence with these others
I would imagine the King George and Gold Cup etc would be far more competitive than this against runners with a lot more claims than these. I would have preferred him in the Hennessy or maybe even… the National?
