For at least the second time this week, another horse jinked sharply on the run in today. Not suggesting anything untoward happening within the crowd but how difficult would it be to get away with using a laser pen aimed at the eyes? Can the beam be easily spotted? Wasn’t that an issue once in a Starkey race, or am I mistaken?

No foul play this time Ken – what are you like with your conspiracy theories?.

He tried to run out down the horse walk – not the first time it has happened at Towcester.

It won’t be the last time it happens their either until they move it to where it should be after the line. However the course executive have said today they have no intention of moving it at the moment. It will be up to the new owners to address if they want to.

The same thing happens at Taunton, Exeter and Worcester where the horsewalk to the course is positioned before the finish. Some opinion suggests that James Davies was trying to correct Topless when unseated last week at Taunton.

At Worcester the paddock exit is near the last flight and I’ve seen horses veer violently right after the flight.

The same thing has happened on the flat course at Ascot since the rebuild

I always thought the ‘beam story’ in the Ile De Chypre case was a rather dubious one. I took it with a large pinch, nay a bag of salt.

It’s either a conspiracy theory or Songs of Praise. It’s been a bit of a ‘Hancock Sunday’, I’m tired, annoyed with myself for having had such a lazy Sunday, the weather’s been ‘orrible and my continued poor performance in Bob’s competition is affecting my thinking. Is there a doctor in the house?

The horses i’ve seen jink out at Exeter have always been towards the stables, yards before the paddock.
Do people propose they should move the stable block?
Its the same for all of them.

lots of times that is thecase Cheekster. I will never forget Spondulicks trained by the late Gordon Richards. I rode him out and as we were heading to the gallops no matter what I did he wouldn’t keep up with the others. When we got to the gallops and turned round and he knew he was facing the stables Zoom!……….he took off like a bat out of hell and no way was he for stopping…………next stop was his box as far as he was concerned.

Long drawn out story but the top and bottom of it is some horse don’t want to leave their box and will do anything to get home. Whether it be their own box or some box they stayed in for a few hours on a race course it makes no difference

If I visit a new course I always have a good look around, and it’s worth noting any facilities which might distract a horse.

Not a case which directly affected the race, but last season at Musselburgh I overheard a deputation of senior jockeys bringing to the attention of Anthea Morshead, the clerk of the course, something distracting the horses on the gallop inside the course on the way to the start. Mrs Morshead clearly acted on the views as the horses galloped down the course to the start for the rest of the afternoon.

At Windsors Bank Holiday meeting on May 5th last year there were kids playing football on the infield near the running rail.

Mooted was already on his toes as they started going down but when passing the kids playing football he really did throw a wobbly and unseated Steve Drowne

Ironically the aforementioned Mooted actually ended up winning in a blanket finish in what was a controversial race.

Warwick is also a bad track for horses jinking. The Easter bank holiday meeting that features a couple of juvenile often sees some action as some horses head for the paddock exit rather than the winning post.

Yes, Exeter’s bad for that. Wasn’t it A Thornton that came a cropper last year when horse ducked out just before the finishing post, which is right next to the parade ring – saw the other horses for the next race and exit stage left.

It’s all down to poor training. If you watch very carefully at greyhound tracks you’ll notice that the rabbit always runs in a straight line past the crowds. Does it jink. No. Because it’s been trained proper!

I was directly behind it next to the first fence and he definitely would have preferred going back to the stable!! Thankfully he still managed to win :?

How easy would it be? Picture this…..

You’re the poor put upon goat employee tasked with ensuring nobody ever gets to collect on this bet. You go to sleep on Tuesday dreaming of the impossible handicaps that will be carded for Thursday when you get to see the declarations at noon. You wake up and you don’t like what you see – where the hell are those 30 runner Punchestown handicaps? But you decide to offer the bet anyway to pick up a few more pennies in front of the steamroller.

Flash foward to the last leg on Thursday. You see Topless cruising to victory. Your life’s work is in ruins. The sole purpose of your existence is about to hit the buffers. What’s worse, your arch nemesis, that bloody pest, Dave Nevison is holding the live tickets. You could be out of a job. Your only hope is going down into storage and dusting off exhibit number one from the Ile de Chypre trial – the infamous bins.

    Whats’ your next move?

But shoot it in the right direction
Make making it your intention-ooh yeah
    Live those dreams
    Scheme those schemes
    Got to hit me
    Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams

I remember going for my very first gentle hack on an old girl of 15, suffering with arthritis, moving on at a snail’s pace, nervously and slowly crossing a narrow bridge across a river, getting to the other side to head back home, thinking to myself "this is a doddle", when whoosh, she shot forward , I went up in the air landing back down with a thud, arms around its neck clinging on for dear life at breakneck speed and only coming to a halt when she was nearly home for tea.
