Wishing them a full recovery from their injuries sustained in the horrendous incident in the Sprint at York yesterday.
It’s a miracle that the horses appeared to be unscathed and that the injuries to the jockeys were not even worse than they are.September 8, 2025 at 20:56 #1739626The amount of times you see this type of incident in a race happen where a horse is going for a gap only for said gap to shut just as they are about to get into it and absolutely nothing happens other than the jockey having to snatch up rather sharpish kind of makes you take for granted just how dangerous the sport is.
As it happened live (and they both go out of camera view) you can’t help but think that both horses are sure to be fatally injured due to travelling at that speed and knowing just how fragile their own legs can be and whilst I did see Crowley momentum bouncing him away from his horse, I was intially more concerned about Whelan as his horse had absolutely knowhere to go and the camera view didn’t really show what happened to him as it followed the race.
While I don’t want to take away from the seriousness of a broken leg in three places (Whelan) and a suspected broken leg and pelvis (Crowley) this incident could have ended up infintely worse considering we were talking about an incident happening in a split second where you are travelling at around 40mph on a sprinter and have no way to react to prepare yourself for a fall of that nature.
Best wishes to both Whelan and Crowley in the hopes that they both have speedy recoveries with no complications from their respective injuries – it was also a huge relief that neither horse suffered any actual injuries although I have no doubt they will be rather stiff and sore for the next few days which will require a lot of extra TLC from their respective grooms.
A reminder/wake up call to just how dangerous this sport actually can be.

Just drive along at 40mph and then consider throwing yourself out of the door it is indeed a dangerous sport. The more I know the less I understand.
