Nicholls has said that Silviniaco Conti will miss Cheltenham and go to Aintree instead.
That means the 5 horses who head the betting for the Jewson have their sights set elsewhere.
Sir Des Champs looks destined to run in this rather than the RSA, for which he trades at 44.
January 19, 2012 at 03:30 #387336His odds will sooooooon be snipped. He was mine at 16s
Fancy a gentleman’s match bet Zarks, Sir Des Champs v Solix? The winner has the right to gloat relentlessly until say, Aintree?
January 19, 2012 at 03:52 #387339Yeah I’ll take you on there, no problem.
Both trainers have a dismal record with their chasers around Cheltenham, but Henderson’s is slightly better and has several placed runners. Mullins is 2/28 in Cheltenham chases; Cooldine and unfortunately cannot think of the other. Wasn’t at the Festival.
Henderson is 9/110 – Long Run the only Festival winner.
January 19, 2012 at 08:47 #387347Florida Pearl in RSA
January 19, 2012 at 09:23 #387353Sorry if I am being a fool but Henderson has a better record than only Long Run at the festival. Top of my head Trabolgan and Fondmort. Am i just reading your chase stat incorrectly?
January 19, 2012 at 10:51 #387361Mullins had rule supreme too ??

Sorry, forgot to mention those stats are over the last 5 years.

That’s just the last 5 years. Extend it a little further and you have
Fondmort won the Ryanair in 06
Non So the Racing Post plate in 06, Liberthine in 05
Greenhope the Grand Annual in 06
Juveigneur the FWKM in 05
Trabolgan the RSA in 05 ( i think )I’m writing him a letter regarding the campaigning of his horses. He’s mad about routines but there’s big races out there that he’s just not entering horses in. His young hurdlers jump better than anyone’s yet he protects them like crazy. Surely Buckley or another big owner would prefer to win a big handicap than a £5,000-£10,000 conditional en route to the festival ?
Some of his horses need 3 miles and they rarely go futher than 2 1/2.
January 19, 2012 at 17:34 #387405Yup, very true. Maybe he’s winning fewer chases at Cheltenham these days because he has fewer good jumpers to show the others how to do it?
January 19, 2012 at 18:13 #387413The field for this race is badly going to chop up. Less than half of the current field shown in the betting will make it I’d expect.
I’d say that anyone with any strong fancies, that can say with any real conviction that they’d expect their horse to line up, now would be the time to get on. I’d imagine most of the principles on the day will be double the price right now

Roll it back a few seasons to see what happend :
Dave’s Dream – repeatedly entered over 2 1/2 when 2 miles is his trip
Jack The Giant – injuries
Mad Max – injuries
The Market Man – injuries
Oedipe – hammered by the handicapper, injured and never the same
Barbers Shop – a 2 1/2 miler who wins a poor 3 miler at Sandown then is campaigned over further with the Gold Cup in mind – never the same. With horses like Twist Magic in the Haldon Gold Cup, why doesn’t Henderson enter a Barbers Shop or a Master Of The Hall in this race ? They’d be getting lumps of weight in a £40,000 race.
He then had a raft of horses like Lord Ragnar, Andytown etc etc who did not progress.1 or no entries in the United House, William Hill, Amlin or Carey Group races at Ascot in the Autumn – they’re big races.Nicholls usually has 1, often 1 horses in there competing and picking up prize money.
Novices like Gibb River – wins in three novice races by a sum total of 29 lengths and is now rated 144 and yet won only £11,000 over jumps – was it not evident from it’s profficient, slick jumping early on that three novice races was not required ?
I love him as a trainer but if i was an owner, i think i’d want him to be braver with my horse’s entries.

Why is the betting so stupid for this race,SC is going for Aintree,PC unlikely to run,AF certainly wont run nor will GC.CC is a bit of a pig and fell on his only chase in Cheltenham. The more i look at this i cant see Sir Des Champs being out of the 3…hes 12/1 whos unbeaten over fences won at the festival last year and it seemed the hill was the reason behind this, hes trained by last years champ. His form has been franked knockfierna has won a G2 and 3 G3’s he prob would have beaten her the last day giving her 4lb he didnt touch a twig that day and he was rode by a clown. He also bet Four commanders an easy 7l who was 2nd to Last Instalment beaten 6.5l but easy. This is his festival target he wont step up to 3m because of the other Gigginstown horses.
To me he looks a great bet at 12’s?January 20, 2012 at 14:28 #387509Exactly why I love Solix at the same price. 5th in a Coral Cup as a 5yo off top-weight on his 2nd start in the UK.
January 22, 2012 at 01:26 #387751Cristal Bonus made an impressive chase debut yesterday at Chepstow and has been inserted at 9/1 for this race now. Was run on heavy ground over 2m 4f so there’s a possibility he could go for the RSA, especially since he was stepped up in trip from 2m1f on his hurdling debut in this country to 3m on his very next start.
He was also beaten a fair old way by Silviniaco Conti in that debut, so exactly how good he is is anyone’s guess.
Will be running in the Scilly Isles chase at Sandown in a fortnight.
January 22, 2012 at 05:53 #387763Just a pity PN has too many good chasers or he’d posssibly have a change of heart and run AlFerof in this. He’d love the trip wouldn’t be rushed like he’ll be in the Arkle and would most likely pi$$ up.
Still hoping Bog Warrior comes over he looks an awesome prospect who may turn out even better than Al Ferof
January 22, 2012 at 11:26 #387788I hope Sir Des Champs is the Gigginstown horse for this race H, having backed him recently.
One of them will surely go for the Powers Gold Cup and I bet it’ll be either Bog Warrior or Last Instalment. If I was betting man I’d say Bog Warrior will stay at home
January 22, 2012 at 17:07 #387818Im confident it’ll be Bo Warrior who will stay at home.He fellt he last day and im told he took ages too get over it.He also won the Drinmore over C so it looks like he’ll stay
