Congratulations to James for winning one of the biggest races of the year, the Grand Steeplechase de Paris yesterday.
I think he’s a seriously underrated jockey, possibly because he rides mainly in France and the north.
Not sure what his percentage of the 530k euro prize is but it’s well deserved.

He rode very well over the weekend Patriot winning 5 of the races netting over 700K euros. His only disappointment would probably have been being beaten on Device on Saturday. He won most of the races by leading or being handy as they came round the last sweeping bend. Mr Macaire uses him a lot so that’s how highly they rate him in France. Talking of Mr Macaire, he doesn’t do smiling much even though he had 4 winners over the weekend including the 1-2 in the big race.
May 23, 2016 at 20:57 #1248148M. Macaire lost his third runner (As D’Estruval) who broke down badly going on to the final circuit.
Echo the earlier comments re James Reveley – got a good thing going over the channel.
May 24, 2016 at 05:36 #1248162Must admit I had not realised that he rode so much in France.

I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysMay 24, 2016 at 19:14 #1248231James is probably the shrewdest jockey ever from the UK. He earns as much money as the great legend AP did, the only difference being that he only has to ride about 25% of the amount of horses that AP rode. Plus he gets far better material and has a minimal risk of injury in France. Softer ground, better schooled horses, more breaks between racedays. He really is a great NH jockey, especially one with a lot of brains.
Well done James and stay healthy!May 25, 2016 at 08:30 #1248261A wonderful judge of pace is James, in a class of his own on the Northern circuit.
May 26, 2016 at 11:30 #1248326Was very impressed with him on the weekend, got his front-runners into a really nice jumping rhythm and he seems a very good judge of pace as well.
May 26, 2016 at 13:07 #1248331I presume there is some reason Mullins or Nichols haven’t had a go at this, especially considering Willie’s success in the the big French hurdle races. The prize money looks very inviting, + I recall Captain Christy finishing second way back in the seventies
May 26, 2016 at 18:11 #1248344I think it’s a combination of the different jumps and the slow, slow, slow then dash for the line nature of the races which may put the big UK and Irish trainers off. It tends only to be the French hurdles which attract runners from these shores.
You would have thought Enda Bolger might have given it a try.
