News just out.
March 9, 2004 at 14:30 #81351A rotten week for racing, and this is the worst news of the lot.
RIP Jair Du Cochet.
March 9, 2004 at 14:31 #81352I just heard it. I still feel numb with shock. What a potential star, what a bloody tragedy :(<br>RIP JDC.
March 9, 2004 at 14:34 #81353Was lucky enough to be at both Huntingdon and Cheltenham for his victories this season.<br>I really don’t know what to say, absolutely devasting to lose such a great horse who had many good years still ahead of him.<br>Sympathies to all involved and the festival will be much poorer for his absence
RIP Jair Du Cochet
March 9, 2004 at 14:51 #81354Really numb, just read this on Ceefax. What a shock.
A terrible waste, thoughts are with the connections of course.
March 9, 2004 at 16:06 #81355Really sad news. We’ll never know how good he really was – I think his very best was yet to come.
:(
March 9, 2004 at 16:16 #81356He could have won this years’ Gold Cup.<br>Racing has lost a horse who was in the process of establishing himself as a real star. It is terrible that he never got to truly prove his critics wrong. I cannot imagine how all those concerned with the horse are feeling.
What a sickening blow before Cheltenham.
March 9, 2004 at 16:47 #81357Very upset to hear this, although he was never one of my faves still a gorgeous horse to watch and so much un tapped potential.
Even with all the bad vibes about racing this week, surely this is what matters most… our horses.<br>
March 9, 2004 at 16:55 #81358I totally agree with Katy’s last sentance.
March 9, 2004 at 16:57 #81359Really saddened by this.
Macaire has never brung through a really good one over here, and after passing on the likes of Azertyuiop, Crystal d’Ainay, Kelrev, to name three, it would have been nice for him to see him get the appraisal he deserves
commiserations to all concerned.
March 9, 2004 at 17:02 #81360Yet again sad to hear.
March 9, 2004 at 17:06 #81361Really bad news. :( Awful for connections.
March 9, 2004 at 17:47 #81362I am devestated. I know this often happens but Jair Du Cochet was my favourite horse bar none. And what will this awful tragedy receive in the papers? A couple of lines underneath some dodgy tipster. Completes a terrible week for racing.<br>RIP, Jair
March 9, 2004 at 17:50 #81363This is indeed heart wrenching stuff. I was at Exeter races today, and a murmur started in one of the bars about Jair du Cochet. I didn’t know for definite until I got back into my car and listened to the news.<br>I am so glad I got to see him in the flesh when he won at Cheltenham.<br>The Cheltenham Festival will sadly miss him.:(
March 9, 2004 at 22:06 #81364Really sad news, a horse I must say I was really fond of, I thought his most impressive performance was in the Feltham last season. RIP.
March 9, 2004 at 22:07 #81365Very sad to hear of this, saw him win at Cheltenham over hurdles and Haydock over hurdles. Very good horse.<br>Martin
March 9, 2004 at 23:05 #81366<br>A real tragedy this, I couldn’t believe it when I came in and flicked on Ceefax to see this.
Like Katy said, he wasn’t my favourite jumper but the style and flowing action always made him great to watch and I’ll always remember that brilliant Juvenile Hurdle win at Cheltenham where he won by about a distance I think it was
Best Mate is the horse for me and obviously this makes his task a little easier, but that is no consolation and even if he wins next week the gloss will be taken off for me and a lot of other people.
What a waste- all those arguments about Ricou’s riding, the King George flop, the Huntingdon victory etc come to this with all our questions unanswered and I just hope that this does not put Macaire off bringing more challengers over to England in the future:( <br>
